fishy taste

I caught a couple of nice channel catfish today. The problem is the catfish from this pond always seem to have a fishy, muddy taste. I thought that at one time I heard about a salt water concoction to soak the fillets in before you cook them or freeze them. Does anybody know this recipe or any other remedy? Thanks in advance for any help.

I like the way you think, PAkev. Trouble is for me is that my fishing buddy's my wife. I think putting fishy water in her coffee might lead to unwanted consequences.

Re: fishy taste

Take anything that looks fatty off and also the mid-line(mudline)from the fish. It should help.

Re: fishy taste

If you are taking then home alive, keep them that way for a couple of days. Feed them corn and keep replacing the water in thier "new pond" so it stays fresh and clean. This will get rid of any mud flavor and make for a right tasty fish. We do this with both carp and catfish.

Re: fishy taste

I've been hearing folks talk about "fishy" taste all my (looooong) life.

Been eating fish all that time, too, including cats, bass, bluegills and even carp from muddy ponds.

Different species taste different. All of them taste like some kind of fish. Some taste best raw. Once had a cat filet that tasted like catfish marinated in milk (bleah).

I think the "fishy" taste is a figment of imagination, sort of like eating your pet steer would bring to mind, making a prime Porterhouse taste "funny".

All the marinating mumbo jumbo is just a ritual to rid the poor fish of evil spirits ("fishy" taste). :D

JB,

Right you are! Fish taste "fishy." Beef tastes "beefy." Lamb tastes like lamb.

What the heck?!? I like fish. I like their fishy taste. I even like anchovies.

When I lived in California, I caught lots of bonito. They're little tunas, and have a lovely dark line down their sides. Most folks remove it, because it has a "fishy" taste. Me? I love that part.

Re: fishy taste

oj - naw, no holding pen, wish I did. Just use a big garbage can. Don't do it much any more - wife isn't as fond of fish as I am, so I don't eat as much of it at home, therefore don't keep near as many. In fact, got in trouble last week because I returned about a dozen brooks and browns between 12 - 16 inches. I should have taken them home I was told. Oh well, I was on vacation and didn't want to clean anything!

Re: fishy taste

I've been eating freshly caught fish long enough to know that certain fish from certain waters may taste stronger, or different than the same species caught in another body of water. I tried the milk trick on both fried and blackened catfish fillets. It made a huge difference. It certainly didn't taste like milk. I am positive I wouldn't of been able to keep you guys away from the dinner table.
