A good topographic map of the lake you fish will show all of these things and more.

Usually available in the sporting goods dept of Wal=mart.

A hump is any place where the bottom raises up from the surrounding bottom. Say you're going along in your boat and the depth finder reads 20' then it climbs to 15' for the next 10-15' and then drops back down to 20' again....that's a hump.

My guess and it's only a guess on the saddle term......if you have a point that comes out into the water and it drops off the farther you get away from shore then pops back up (not saying to the surface of the water but higher than it was inbetween the shore and your current location) then I'd say the saddle was the low spot between the point and the hump out away from the shore. (if that makes sense)

A structure can be any bottom feature like rocks, sand bars, dead trees, marine growths, etc. where fish like to hide...the nature and depth of these can be very helpful in knowing where and how to catch fish.

Finding there can be like looking for a needle in a haystack on some lakes if you don't have a good lake map and sonar unit.

Re: fishn structure??????????

In your example that would be a hole. A hump would be the exact opposite, as shown by Lizard.....

Re: fishn structure??????????

I found a good website not as good as iboats lol, but it has lots of info and sketches.thanks for helping me my fellow iboaters.

I have always used mono fishing line here on lake mead, nevada. I have just bought my first fluorocarbon line by viscious,8lb test clear.I also have always used im6 graphite poles, never over 6ft, but i think i might try to change that too so i can feel more hits and licks lol.my plans are to practice fishing structure this yr anything deep enough i cant see the bottom.I am also fine tuning my fish finder to see these things best, one thing i noticed about my humminbird fish finder,it 018.jpgwill show your jig going down on it(20degree single cone, switchfire) is it always shows bigger fish than they really are after i catch them.I have adjusted the sensitivity and things trying to fix this,i even thought about making something i can sink under my boat that resembles a bass and size and get it set that way,,maybe work im not shure. If anyone has any ideas about all this stuff i have just mentioned thanks for reading and let me know what u think.

Drop a 1/8th jig behind your boat by the transducer, then make adjustments to your hummingbird. With a 1/8 jig you should just barely pick it up on the screen. I usually don't mess with the unit after I get it set unless I'm in water that's not my normal fishing depth. My normal depths are 5 to 45 ft. anything over about 60 then I make some adjustments to the unit.
Got a buddy that swears by the fluorocarbon and will only use it.
Good luck this year on your fishing.

Here's my best striper and while I was catfishing none the less... I kept hearing him chasing bait in 2 ft of water, so I loaded up a "Candy" shad live on a rig and tossed it out.....2 minutes later I was reeling/fighting him.

thats a beauty,,, mine was 19lbs i believe yours is somewhat more.I caught mine while i was throwing top waters for smaller ones, when i too heard a big one feeding near the shore. luckily i had a big bomber tied on to another pole just for fun as i cast it toward the noise it jumped up and took the lure before it hit the water,, was so cool will never forget it.

still dont fully undertand the saddle,, isnt it the same just a inch or two to the left of it,i hear saddles are the holy grail of fishn structure,i though it was when the two sides go away from each other your demo there staying the same almost.

Re: fishn structure??????????

OK let me see if I can explain this.. look at the 13 ft marker in the center, that's 13 ft. below the surface of the water. To the right of it the bottom tops down to 23 ft below the surface, that's a 10 ft. drop. Keep going right towards the surface and you notice that it starts climbing to 17 ft, then up to 12 ft below the surface, then drops 5 ft. to 17 ft. below the surface again. The 12 ft. would be the "horn" of the saddle viewed from the side.

Re: fishn structure??????????

Keep in mind that my drawings are not to scale... there are quick drawings to give a baseline to the topic of a saddle. I can see why fish would like to hold in these areas and probably where you're located at, these types of formations are probably common under the water, they're not so much common here in Virginia. It's usually rockier based lake bottoms that hold structure patterned after the above drawings but there are rare times that soft bottoms will hold a saddle, it just probably won't be as extreme as with a rock type structure.
