I've noticed on some of the sites alot is mentioned of past fishing experiences we had with our fathers. Since Fathers Day is just around the corner I thought maybe some would have some special stories to share with us.

A few years back while fishing in N. Minn. my dad and I started fishing at sunset and didn't come in until sunrise. During that time we caught alot of fish, but also shared of other special times we had together(Good and Bad). During the night we joked caught fish and got tangled up quite a bit. A month later he passed away. Thanks so much 12 Footer for bringing back that cherished moment for me. You,JB, Crabbait and a lot of other members make this site so enjoyable. Stay healthy and also safe.

Cherish those special times you have because he may not be there tommorrow.

Re: Fishing With Dad

You are very right gonefishin. I owe all of my love for the outdoors to my mom. Mom and dad seperated when I was 7 and my mom took me and my brother every year on trips; she got her love for the outdoors from her father. As far as my dad, I have patched our relationship over the years, and become very close again. As much as I wish I hadn't lost all those years with him, I'm just glad I have the future to look forward to. My dad has since remarried and I now have a step-brother who is only 7 and is on his way to the love of the outdoors. I plan on taking him and my dad out this year with hopes of converting my dad to the outdoors type.
On a seperate note, I had just staring getting to be good friends with an older neighbor couple of mine from the Phillipines. The husband loved fishing, but only knew it as bluegill fishing from shore with a bobber. Last summer I walked the ponds with him around our houses and taught him the rubber worm method for bass; and he loved it. I promised to take him out in the boat for some good fishing. Now this guy was probably the nicest man anyone could ever meet; he was alway's happy, a good neighbor, very generous with his time, and would do anything for anyone. Needless to say, and God Bless his Soul, he passed away from a sudden heart-attack on Jan. 11th at the age of 52. I felt as though I never kept my promise, and I was really disappointed in myself, just thinking about it now brings a tear to my eye. Never ever pass up those kind of opportunities. You will forever regret it.

I will alway's remember Frank and the times we shared as well as the times I wish we would have shared......God bless him and his family.

Re: Fishing With Dad

My dad, Bill, was probably one of the greatest Bluegill fisherman that ever lived. He never caught any record fish, but he always caught fish and it did not matter if it was below zero or a hundred degrees, he was there. Although he traveled to many exotic places, Bluegill fishing was the only fishing he ever really cared for.

When we were kids, we'd go on Michigan fishing trips with one of Dad's annoying (but true blue) fishing buddies, who had a plain aluminum boat and motor. Of course, this boat sounded like a drum on the lake, with us kids kicking our feet or dropping stuff on the floor. My dad was always scolding us to "be quiet in the boat".

Fast forward twenty years and my dad, who was under cancer treatment, offers to take me fishing in that very same boat. Since I was on military leave, time was short, but something told me that I should not miss this trip.

As I sat there silently Bluegill fishing, I could not help but notice that dad was now the one who shuffling his feet or dropping things in the aluminum boat.

I thought about saying something jokingly, but just left it at that, realizing that things really do come full circle. It was a nice afternoon and the sucess of our last fishing trip together, could not be measured in the fish sack.

Re: Fishing With Dad

My Mom and Dad were divorced when I was in diapers, so the times I had with him were short and devoted to sharing things other than fishing.

I learned fishing on my own, mostly, with help from a wonderful family friend who had been Dad's roommate at Princeton.

My Son, his son, and several other grandsons are all avid fishermen and I have a wonderful collection of memories of fishing with them.

Except for the 6 years he spent in the USMC, we have gone to northern MN or Ontario for musky and walleye for a week every summer for about 30 years.

When he was small, his Mom and sisters went with us, but for the past ten or twelve years it has been the two of us plus a mix of youngsters. Now I have a Great Grandson to add to the gang in a few years.

That trip is easily the high point of my year... better than Christmas, New Years, Birthday and Father's day all in one. :) :)

Take a Dad fishing on Father's Day!

Re: Fishing With Dad

My fathers father was a lighthouse keeper interrupted only by WW1. He taught my father to fish, hunt, and survive from whatever was available. Some of the places they lived were as barren as anything I've seen. Others were plentiful. My father taught me to do likewise, but fishing was his love. We spent many enjoyable hours in a dingy catching snapper talking a lot. My dad was a shipwright and he shared as much as possible with us 5 kids.
Dad went to the Kaipara Harbour in later years to fish a spot I found and have fished over 23 years now. One trip he looked tired and rode his motorbike the 3 kilometres over the sand back to the camp. I rode back with him and we talked. I got the chance to tell him just how much he meant to me and my family. I told him I loved him very much. I didn't know it at the time but dad had less than two weeks left with us so it became so important to me that I had that moment to share with him.
My children have fished with me and now my grandaughter has been out!
My fathers father would be pleased. I know my father would be happy also. I'm happy to have children who love the sport and they've assured me the grandchildren will continue to fish.
Aren't family's great!!
Ross

Re: Fishing With Dad

With Fathers day just around the corner I have been thinking about my dad more than usual. He's the one that got me on or near the water at a very young age. Camping, fishing, boating and lets not leave out crapping in the woods. We never got to do much after he retired because of his health, I really hated that because he had so many plans when he would have had the time.
But he has left me with a wealth of good memories.
I am going to be a grandparent here in a few weeks  I really am looking forward to watching and helping another youngun come up and hopefully pass on some of the experiences and good times with them.

" if trouble comes , boy , RUN.. just run... DON'T GET IN TROUBLE. " an it worked.. when i saw serious trouble commin' i got the heck away.! most of my old buddys are in jail or dead.. anyway,, we'd go fishin' there was 15 ponds in a 5 mile ring & each one was good.. but we'd have our bad days ,too fish from before first light to noon an nuthin', not a hit... he'd take the paddle a wack the water surface yellin' ' WAKE THE HECK UP ,, YOU S O B'S ,, WAKE THE HECK UP.. " then we fish alittle long an head on back ... it made him feel better.. hey,, that's all that mattered...

Re: Fishing With Dad

I'm 34 years old and have never really had any sort of relationship with my dad. I have always loved him, but we just never clicked. It was the same with my mother. Well, in the last year my mom invited me to go the Brownsville Revival with her and now my family joins her there every Friday night for the most awsome worship and praise services, and my dad and I go fishing together about every other week. The bad thing is, my dad does not accept mom's faith or her spiritual journey and wants out. It is sad, the first time in my life that I have a mom and dad they on the verge of splitting up. Oh well, I will continue to cherish every moment we are together, and follow the Lord's plan.

BTW, I love this forum and the good folks that post here. God bless you all:)

Re: Fishing With Dad

My father took my brother and I fishing and hunting every chance he could. This was about every other weekend. The last fishing trip we made together was 5 days before he past away in an auto accident. We caught a bunch of fish and had a great time. Every year a group of us made a bird hunting trip and it was on this trip that the accident happened. He is in a much better place. The fishing is fantastic and I figure that he is designing a bigger deer stand. In September it will be 8 years since he left on his last hunting trip and not a day goes by that I don't think about him and the memories that my sisters, brother and I shared with him in the outdoors.

I have tried to teach the lessons that I learn from him to my children. I hope they enjoy the outdoors and learn to respect all that it has to offer.

Everyday is mothers and fathers day!
