OK, I'm confused. As far as I can tell everybody and their brother are hosting fishing tournaments these days. I want to start fishing some tournament in the NJ, NY, and PA area this year. I want to get the most bang for my buck and the time I’m going to put in. Should I stick to tournaments sanctioned by BASS?

Also, I noticed that most of the fishing boat manufactures are now offering incentives if you win tournament in their boats. Any thoughts on who has the best deal regarding tournament paybacks? This may affect my boat purchase decision.

tournament fishing is all about your ability to catch fish in a tournament setting. The most bang for your buck depend on your skill level. Beginner sticks to the local money tournaments, entry fee normally less then $50/event. These are just bunch of guys get together weekly, put money in a pot and try to win it. You might find one fishing a lake close by. Advance anglers fish bigger tournament circuit, involves long distance travel. After entry fee, gas, food, logging, you'll end up spending $500-600 bucks easily. You've got to be good to fish these otherwise, you're donating money.

koolerb , Depending where in Jersey you are at there are plenty of tourney's to fish in eastern Pa. Like gonefishie said , the local ones are fun and you can come home with a few hundred bucks. If you are willing to travel over the river into Pa. I can hook you up with a tourney at least two nights a week, and every Sunday. Most of the Sunday ones are B.A.S.S. clubs. Check in here,, www.just4thought.com ,,, and check into tournament section.

Thanks for the reply’s.

Flahthead, Eastern PA would work for me. And I can only fish on the weekends anyway. Is there a specific B.A.S.S. club that you would recommend?

All the ones in the local area are good clubs. They all have open buddy tourneys. These are tourneys that you can fish and not have to be a member of their club. 911 bass anglers, blue mountain bass anglers, pocono bass anglers, trailer hook bass club, to name a few all put on a nice event.

There are also many "pick up" tourneys that go on. These are when a few of the guys get together through in some $$ in and fish for lunker. winner take all.

If your into trekking to NE Pennsylvania,
Midnight Madness Tournaments at Lake Wallenpaupack are a blast. 6PM to 3AM for $20 .......... A bargain. This is a lunker tournament for walleye, stripers, and catfish.
There's also a few campgrounds around the lake that you can check into before and after the tournament if you want to spend the night (or rest of the morning) until heading back home.
Heres a link for the 2006 tournament shechedule details.
http://www.billsguideservice.com/midnight.jpg

Sounds like a good time. Do you use all live bait at night? How is navigating Lake Wallenpaupack at night?

Anything goes........livebait, lures, and/or trolling.

Almost everytime I go there at night, someone is blasting the shoreline with a spotlight trying to figure where they're at or where they need to go. It is wise to have a GPS and sonar to make life a lot easier and safer.

All in all navigating the pack isn't a big problem because it is big enough to dilute fishermen fairly well. My worst experience was hitting a dead floating log during high water late last spring.

My usual tournament partner works every other weekend. Let me know if you want to connect on one of the alternate weeks.

Re: Fishing Tournaments NJ, NY, PA/Boat Manufacturer's

hey koolerb,
there are a couple of bass tournaments in upstate NY on lake champlain, they are big money shows. and there are some local tourny's.

my partner and i thought of trying the local tournaments but there are rules like havin to be at the launch by 5am, there is a size limit, you have to be back at the launch by a set time, you have to wear life jackets, no beer drinking, no peeeing off the side of the boat while youre holding a bass, etc etc etc. so we just fish and enjoy.

Re: Fishing Tournaments NJ, NY, PA/Boat Manufacturer's

And thanks again. I found a PA BASS Federation club that fishes their tournaments pretty close to where I live, and on some interesting lakes. The tournaments are $40 each, regional is $500 but I don't plan on doing that one. Waiting to hear back from the chapter president.
