Re: fishing tips

OK, I think Summerville SC is in the low country of SC so your water is likely to be more far more shallow, cloudy and warmer than you are used to.

Structure and cover are your friends, flip a shallow running crank bait near the shore in the mornings and late afternoon/evenings and try fishing (carolina rigged) soft plastic baits during the warmer parts of the day. Once the water temp tops 80 degrees try hovering over a deep drop off and cast up on the shallow ledges and allow your bait to drop off the deep ledge. Carolina rigging works best for this.

Another strategy for warm weather fishing in the south is to cast amongst the boat docks. Try using a Yamamoto Senko worm with no weight and (using a spinning rod) try to skip it up under the dock and let it sink.

I hope those help. Now anyone have any tips for me? I just moved to Tennesse and the fishing is surprisingly different from what I am used to in Virginia and Florida.

For bass, I've always had good luck with light colored beetle spins, or a snagless sally.

gdelmoro: yes ... get warm boots... lol

I fish in Canada and had luck with rubber crawfish. Used different sizes but it seem the bigger the better and crawfish green wins over other colors.

I also have more success when I rig em on a hook, not on jig head.

Good luck,

Well, I would think that it would be good to know how to make a Carolina rig. :}

You mean Smith Mountain Lake? If so, it is a very deep and clear lake and has lots of rocky points. Learn to use your depth finder because there is some really useful structure under the lake from before the flooded it area. You can find fence posts and submerged hills and all kinds of cool places. These tend to hold the fish very well in the hottest part of the summer and also the coldest part of the winter.

Striper fishing is fantastic there especially on nasty days were it is sleeting or spitting snow. Hook up some alewife shad and hang on!

Senoir chief: Well, I would think that it would be good to know how to make a Carolina rig.

Yes that's pretty well what I meant ... Caroline rigged.
But I do make one small modification ... when I insert the second part of the rubber bait on the hook I let it go right true so it comes out on the other side and then I put a 'trout food nugget' to hide the hook tip. Also I try to control dept by adding different split shots somethiing like 6 inches from the bait.

I will only do the complete Caroline rigging (hidding the hook) when fishing in weeds.

I pretty do the same modification and for the same purpose when 'Texas rigging'

Cheers.

Re: fishing tips

YES Ripfence,

Smith Mountain. I'm going the middle two weeks in October. Last year 2nd week in Oct. bait fish were breaking in several coves but the Bass weren't biting. Found out from a local that ai should use an unweighted fluke and just let it fall. That produced some bass but when the bait fish dissapeared on a blue bird day, the fluke caught nothing.

Thanks for your post. Do you know of any SML Fishing forums, sites, resources????
