Hello
We are thinking of moving from upstate NY to Irvine,CA. Is there any fishing there?? Fresh and marine? Are 2 cycle engines legal there? What travel time should I count on to get to a decent lake?
To be out on the ocean there, is a 17 footer any good or should I think bigger?
Anxious in upstate.

lived in long beach for many years. not a ton of
lakes. big bear has a small lake with some trout.
also have lake elsinore, but both a a bit of a
drive. not sure about OB regs.
if I were you, I'd look into a trailerable boat
and fish the ocean. dockage cost is huge!

If I were (shudder, ) forced to move to So. Cal, I'd go to Google and look up the various So.Cal fishing/boating forums. There's lots of them in the PacNW, so So. Cal must have even more.
Sea Magazine www.goboatingmag.com seems to have a West Coast slant, though it's more cruising than you may wish.
Irvine, CA? New York can't be that bad!

Re: Fishing the West Coast.

i'm from ventura calif, i mostly fished the salt water. and in ventura it was the best fishing i've ever had! anchovie is the bait of choice, they catch white sea bass, sand bass, calico bass, big halibut, and when el nino comes in they get alot of the warm water sportfish, there are free public docks in most marina's. irvine is about 1hr south of ventura, and some of the best bass fishing in the world! you have lake casitas, lake castaic, lake pyrimid, lake piru is good for huge channel cats and trout.
i could go on & on. i dont know about the fresh water two stroke regs but you can find out no problem. i'll tell you though, its no place to raise kids! lots of drugs, graffiti, gangs & crime. no joke!

fishing you will find! and your boat will be fine in the marina's but i wouldnt go far from the marina's, remember! california has big surf.
the marina's at high tide provide some good fishing. but you'll have to travel a little to get some good fresh water fishing.

Re: Fishing the West Coast.

I grew up in SoCal and there are a large number of excellent fishing spots (fresh and salt).

2 strokes are still legal except on a few lakes. I am not sure about being able to bring one in from out of state though.

If you have a 17 foot Boston Whaler, then you are good to go for offshore. Anything else is at your own risk :D

The drive time depends on where you will be fishing. From Irvine, the coast is maybe 30 minutes at rush hour. You are within 90 minutes of some of the best bass fishing in the world in San Diego county. Head to the mountains (San Bernardino National Forest, 60 to 90 minutes) and you will find many decent lakes that are stocked and some wild trout streams. The Santa Ana mountains behind Irvine used to have some great trout fishing in the creeks when I was a kid but I have not fished them in 20 years.

Catfish1 is dead on about Ventura County lakes. The Colorado River holds a lot of great fishing and is about 3 hours east of Irvine.

I would shy away from Lake Elsinore unless the water quality has improved dramatically. When I was a kid, you could stand up in the middle some years and the annual fish kill was still happening when I moved to Texas in 1995.

There are several lakes within an hour of Irvine that offer up decent waterskiing if you want to do that. The great thing about Southern California is because of its lack of natural water, there have been a ton of reservoirs built. However, since the biggest percentage of people in California live south of Bakersfield, you will compete for space on the lakes.

Re: Fishing the West Coast.

you want some more huh? well i'll tell you about the two best fishing spots i have ever fished & why! #1 ventura marina at night with live anchovies free lined. the spot is in front of a place called hornblowers, its a large wide dock, used for unloading commercial fishing boats. the dock has lights at the end of it. at night you can look under the lights and see huge white sea bass, & pretty good size barracuda's. every time i used to go there i would either have a fish spool me or have the line snapped. you have to use steel leaders, the sea bass have a legal size of 28 inches and they are very strong!
the other spot is not too far from the last spot. it is in the ventura marina, on the same road to get to hornblowers, instead of going to hornblowers you go straight to the end of the road. there is a sandy beach point in the marina, anyways this spot has no lights but does have a drastic drop off all around it, with currents that pull toward the outlet. its real good at night as well! you never know what you'll hook into in that spot, all i know is you usually cant finish a cigarette before getting a bite. i would usually use a whole dead anchovie with a 3/4 oz egg sinker in that spot. :D
