Want to buy a Xmas gift for someone who just moved to Galveston and just wants a rod and reel to fish from the shore in the gulf. Like to keep it under a $100. Don't know what he wants to fish for or anything else so an all purpose combo. Any suggestions appreciated as well as a good place to mail order. Thanks

I know I'm going to get hammered for this one but take a look at a Wal-Mart Super Center. They have some relatively inexpensive combos that might fit the bill.

I fish inland streams and lakes and have no idea what someone would fish for from the shore in the gulf. Nor how heavy a setup, was hopping someone from the area would have a suggestion, and actually a Wal Mart super store has great buys on some things....

I bought, and like the Shimano Sahara 2000, I put it on a Berkley Lighting 6'6" Medium Light Spinning Rod. I also got two full spools of String wound for me at Sports Academy, and a few lures, all under $100.00.

Now that I bought it, I hardly use anything else, and plan to buy another Same Reel, maybe a different rod, but it works great, and would make an Excellent gift.

I have a friend that likes to Salt water fish, and he has 6 of these reels, and inexpensive Rods, that he has caught some big fish on. In fact, the last time I talked to him, he landed a bigger fish that the guy he was with, that broke a REAL EXpensive rod landing a smaller fish. The broken Rod also had a REAL Expensive REEL mounted on it, that would also need some repairs from something like gears stripping.

Some Walmarts carry them also, and I don't care who wants to hammer me. :D

GodsBeasts' rig is good, but if they will be fishing in the open surf, I think they will need something bigger. A surf rod is generally longer (10') and heavier, as is the reel.

I'd talk with someone at a local sport shop, and see what they use.

GodsBeast and Roscoe, thanks for the advice. GodsBeast outfit sounds good but I also wondered if it would work from shore. Anyone know a tackle shop down there (Galveston)that they would recommend? I am up in the PNW.

Both suggestions are good. Personally I would take a trip out there and see what everyone else is using. I frequently use light to heavy freshwater rods about ranging from 6'to 7' long as well as a light weight 9' spinning rod with 6# line in the surf for smaller fish (anything up to about 3#) but to get a big bait and some distance you need a surf rod of at least 10' and 12' or 15' being better. I understand lots of folks wade where you are talking about for both trout and spottail and about a 7'MH spinning rod would serve you well for starters. As far as reels go make sure you have a good drag and a capacity of at least 200yrds (preferably a lot more) of whatever weight line you are using as S/W fish like to run.

Jshep.. When you narrow down the type of rod you want look at Boaters World. They have very good prices on rod/reel combos, with free shipping for orders over $100.00. Good Luck ;)
Offshore 22
Boaters World

Thanks for the advice, ended up getting Daiwa Daiwa Beefstick 12'
Tica LH7000 reel (spinning) (175yd/30lb)

For surf fishing they say you can cast 60 yards.
