I have done this in the past on advice that I read in a magazine and heard on TV with limited success. Well, this Monday afternoon the wind was really whipping and I could actually see the current coming around this point. I tied on a crankbait and gave a cast into the wind and pulled it across the point and wham, I caught a nice 4.5 #er. Took it off and had my friend cast into it and wham, he caught a nice three #er. We stuck it out there for awhile, and pulled half dozen bass off that point. Nothing under 2 #s. Made a believer out of me.

hey LD
I have another good tip. last weekend i went to lake istopoga in central fl and it was really windy also (2ft swells) the wind and waves were crashing up on a bank and creating foam. try casting a frog into it,or a top water bait. we were using a zoom horny toads.we pulled out some nice fish including an 8lber, in 6 to 12 inches of water.

Is there a trick to holding the boat in the wind parallel to the bank in that situation, cwilt?

I got to get a bigger T/M. two-foot swells usually keep me "all coved up" (I just made up that term). :)

p.s. thanks for the tips.

In 2' swells, I would be looking for a quiet cove somewhere. Not only would my feet be wet, I dont think I could stand up. Not to mention my trolling motor being out of the water most of the time. Maybe Im just a wuss though.

Hey so what is the trick for casting INTO the wind with a baitcaster? especially strong wind as in your situation LD? I have minimal success and most of the times I get a bird nest when casting against the wind.

Heavy lure, tighten the spool, crank up the magnetic backlash control, side-arm low trajectory cast. A floating crankbait will at least wait around while you untangle your spool. Or else get a spinning reel. :)

Hey LD, how's that Berkley Cherrywood rod workin for ya?

You answered gonefishie as well as I could have, thats how you do it. I liked the "floating bait" thing.

The rod is working out real well, I like it great. I think I will double it up as a SteelHead rod this Fall if I get a chance to go this year.

Re: Fishing points in the wind.

you nailed it jtexas. side arm casting!!! try to keep the bait low during the cast even pitching works. if you are using weightless senkos like i have been using, i try to keep the rod low on the retrieve so the wind does'nt bow the line

Fishing points in the wind sounds like another day at the lake for this kid.

depending when and where.. I target points with steep drops to deep water for walleyes.. rocks and rubble or dispersed weeds after I've covered the point I'll slide back to the wind swept inside curve of the near weedline or flat.

gotta love gettin' wet in the wind! one of the reasons I picked up a heavy duty 70" shafted bowmount for the project boat..

dang, I gotta get that thing done

one of old my old fishing buddies motto is if you want to catch fish find the windy est points and through a spinnerbait if done real good on windy points but it does wear you out especially on big water.
