Went to a small public ramp last weekend.
No dock. (They haven't put it in yet) and plenty of bank to fish from.

Prepped the boat and started to back down the ramp.

3 kids and 2 adults standing on in the ramp fishing. I stop the truck and politely ask them to move so I could launch the boat. One adult says, "We're fishing here".

I told him I would launch and be gone in a few.
He then gave the stink eye and says come on kids he's gotta launch his boat now. But in a real Ahole type of way.

Some people.

It's like an old fella told me one time. It doesn't take all kinds, we've just got all kinds. If it is a public ramp check with whoever is over it and ask them to post a sign:
No fishing from ramp or dock.
For your safety and the safety of others

It would be a shame if some of their equipment got ran over as they ran for safety as I back my boat right into where I am supposed to.

you wonder who raises people like that, and worry that he's raising his children to be the same way; self-centered, inconsiderate, and believing the world is set out for his convenience only. They are the ones with the entitlement affliction that is bankrupting our country, morally and economically.

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

They are the same ones that will back down onto a ramp and then proceed to load and prep the boat for launch.
Then when they retrieve the boat thy will park on the ramp to do the reverse of above.
As well as sit there while they light up a cigarette before moving off.

The worst part is that as much as the people fishing need to be taught a stern lesson in common courtesy, and general consideration for others. Minutes after , your tow rig and trailer will be there unattended and a target of retaliation Your damned if ya do, damned if ya don't...

I avoid the retaliation by making a big thing of sitting just off shore and taking a bunch of pictures. The people, their vehicle, especially a close up of their face and maybe hand gesture.

If there's damage, there *** is grass and I'm the lawn mower.

What fries me is that when I come back in, I have to pick up their empty sandwich wrappers, bait containers, and loaded diapers.

I can't forget the guy who threw and snagged his large castnet right infront of my moving boat as I docked alongside the pier for the public boat ramps! Signs say no fishing from the dock. I was furious and loudly let him know In my broken spanish!

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

usually my ramps say no fishing diving or swimming and there is no problems infact most the time people move there vehicals out of the way so life goes on smoothly where i put in there are 3 docks so 6 launches.

i will some times block 1 for prep and after i load my boat up, IF! AND ONLY IF there is no one around or 1 other boat if i know that it its tight like 4 ramps taken i will prep early or pull up, so on the off chance some one comes along i am not in the way.
i hate getting to the ramp behind some one with a 30 foot cabin cruiser who takes 20 minuites to prep right on the ramp on an 80 degree saturday thats something you need to do in the parking lot before you back down taking a ramp space.
our ramps are set up 3 for launch 3 for retrieve at night all 6 retrieve basically and in the morning about 4-5 will launch pretty much common sense. its like the check out at a store, get in line pay and leave.

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

In the state I live in (as in most states) Oregon has a 5 mph no wake zone at or by any dock/s within 200 feet. After watching this idiot from my boat while fishing, I noticed him flying about 50 feet from the dock and boat launch. His first past just made me and the people at the ramp give him stink eye. Now he didn't do this just once, but three times. On his second pass, I could hear people yelling at this idiot. Well as he turns around to go by even closer to the launch area for his third and final pass lol, I reached into one of my rod holders and found a setup that needed to be restrung. Can you guess where I am going with this? About the time I thought it was right, I pitched a weighted line right across his path. It was cool to watch my reel just strip all of that old 12lb mono clean off! Less than 15 seconds later, he came to a dead stop in the water. (I was laughing my *** off) So now he has the motor up sees whats wrong and precedes to cut fishing line from his prop. This is the best part! While cutting the line away, and not paying to much attention to what was going on around him, one of the ski boats that was at the launch area while this idiot was causing havoc, They got as close to him as possible and pulling skier and just dam near dround this guy by knocking him clean off his boat. He was pissed!. He soon learned about the 5 mph no wake zone!

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

A while ago I was a t Whiskeytown lake outside of Redding, CA. We pulled into a little arm off the lake to have lunch. Had my boat sitting on the beach (Not fine sand, but more of the course kind). While we were eating and taking it easy in the shade, the family across the arm started to pull their kids on a hydroslide back and forth in a circular pattern kicking up HUGE wakes. Well, my boat started to pound sand, so I had to go out in the water and fight to keep it off the sand against the waves. Once they finished and put their boat on the beach, I backed out, had my friends sit on the back, set my Merc up a notch or two on the tilt pin and gave them the same treatment. When I finished the same number of laps as they did, I drove over to them and asked how they liked that. He said that his boat cost more than mine did. I said that if you go by income, mine cost a LOT more and that the bottom of my boat ment just as much as the bottom of his did too him and that if he did that again, I would have the sherriff out there in a heartbeat as the arm wasn't wide enough for that kind of activity.

More than likely the guy fishing on the ramp was jealous that you had a boat and he didn't.Too bad he has to pass on his attitude to the kids.

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

We,ve had people stand on the end of the short, 5' wide docks, bobber fishing, and would just stare and not move as we approached to let dad,not a small man, step off the bow to get the truck/trlr. to leave.I would pull up and he would just say Hello!, or Goodmorning! and jump right into them if they didnt back up!We also saw a man and woman fishing, in a 10'dingy right infront of the 2 ramps!!,they had a huge lake to fish and were oblivious that they were impedeing the launching and loading w 4 boats trying to load up at once. A big bass boat passed right by the dingy, less than a yard, and to the dock. And two guys working on their old motor, tied to the dock on the ramp side of the dock  We had to tell them they could move the boat to the other side of the dock, w no ramp, and not block it............Here's your sign.

I don't get it why even fish at a ramp, pollution is highest there, the amount of boats coming in and out have to keep the fish away........and you are a pain to everyone. I know at my ramps you don't even want to get your feet wet as they might melt off.

I thought the same thing. Last year one day I took my boat to the lake trying to diagnose a problem. I ended up launching/retrieving it 3 or 4 times in the span of an hour so I could wrench on the OB in the parking lot. It was dead there but there was a family fishing at the boat launch. Off the dock and off the shore beside the dock. I felt kinda bad but hey, there's plenty of other non-boat launch places there to fish!

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

Actually at our usual lake the ramp is an excellent fishing location. Before we bought our first boat we fished near it and if there were NO boats or no chance of one coming is right away we would occasionally toss a line up the middle and have caught 4-5 lbs bass like that. Of course we would never hinder a boat going in or out and would help some folks out from time to time. Staying on the ramp is a no-no, although they are not posted here. Game wardens will run people off of them sometimes, other times they won't...at least at the smaller ones. Now on busy lakes of course we stayed away from these. The reason for the smaller lakes having decent or better fishing is that on ours (Elk Fork, Ripley WV) is that the bass knew from past history fishermen tossed leftover minnows overboard there...so bass frequented that ramp area. So an old timer there told me.:D Still, you will have some horse's a**s that would not move and we have had more than our share of boat prep while at the dock too. Had two canoes hold everyone up recently as they took turns wrestling each other while loading and unloading their crap. Same ones we ran into at one of the coves we were fishing. One of them threw his line the wrong way and hooked a buddy in the other canoe, so they were laughing, cussing, and so forth LOUDLY all across the lake....my guess drinking as well.

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

Ramp I needed to use last night was flooded, and the dock was put in pretty goofy, leaving the possibility of blocking the ramp tying up on one side, or sticking the nose of the boat in on the other side into some swamp grass, but close enough to tie off. There was a man and a kid fishing on the dock, with their fairly large tackle box blocking access to the cleat. As I approached I announced that I had to put the nose of the boat in that spot, to which the man turned his back on me and ignored any further instruction.

At about 10', I hit the button on the Wal-Mart air horn in my hand. He quickly closed the tackle box and left. I think he wrecked his pants.

Re: Fishing on the ramp.

I'm very sympathetic to people who are shore fishing or ramp fishing as I believe they often have no other real alternative. I did lots of shore fishing before I had the wherewithall to own a boat. When someone came up, we reeled in and waited until they were done. So, when launching or landing, I usually greet them with a pleasant tone and announce my intentions to launch/dock and wait/circle to give them time to reel in. If I get ignored, then the gloves come off.

We had this girl laying across the dock reading a book who was oblivious to everyone who had to step over her. When we launched, I made it a point to wade through to the dock and then step slowly over her. She was drenched and finally got up and moved out of the way.

One time, we were backing in to launch and there were two people bucket fishing on the gravel launch. Refused to acknowledge our presence or budge from their positions. I know my boats and can back in to just about any spot. Told the wife, there's room. I backed in between them nearly rubbing their buckets with my fenders. They were unfazed. We loaded up the boat having to work around them and launched. When I pulled out, instead of going slowly and allowing the water to recede off the trailer and tires as I usually do, I went fast enough to soak them down but good. Oops, hazard of ramp fishing. They moved, then.

What kills me are the looks you get. Like you're infringing on their right to fish. It's a BOAT LAUNCH. If you want to fish from it, fine. Just don't get bent out of shape if someone actually wants to use it for its intended purpose.
