Although I have the ability to mark fish on my GPS, I thought marker bouy's may give me a little better idea of boat positioning when trying to catch those fish.

I've seen these in the tackle shops (usually sold in a set of three different colors) and now believe I have a practical use for them.

Just curious if and how other folks use these and what benefit they recognize from them.

Helpful advice appreciated.

Kevin

They work well as long as you take into consideration the wave/wind movement as when you put them out it takes awhile to unwind. If you try to be too specific then difficulties arise. I have always found out, to use as a reference marker, by throwing them away from the boat. That way if you use the wind/wave action you can keep it away from where you are fishing but can still come back to where you want.
Also, if on a well fished lake and put one out and catch fish, you will have company. Guranteed.

They work fine on un-crowded lakes. But on busy lakes the wave makers love to stop and try to "steal" them. I've had to resort to plastic jugs on my fav. lake. As an added benifit, these jugs are also used by people to mark stumps/rocks, so I get less people buzzing me.

I use mine all the time. Never have a problem with people crowding or stealing it (I'm always within casting distance of it)
If I find a place I want to fish then out goes the marker. I then anchor away from it & cast at it.
Even if the fish aren't biting AT the marker, it's a good way to reference where you got that last bite.....
About crowding, I was able to stay in one spot all day with my buoy out. I was catching fish left & right. Just casually fish and don't draw attention to yourself & you should be fine. While sometimes I do watch other fisherman, sometimes I pay them no attention at all unless something draws my attention :p

P.S. What do you fish for?

I use 'em - as a point of reference for drifting, usually.

I use them while trolling and area after I mark or catch a fish. Sometimes two of them.
Troll between them, using as reference.

Or drop one when you get a strike. Then repeat the same approach to the marker.

Thanks for the input fellas.....

Got a B-day coming up and put in for a set of 3 along with the holder to attach on my console.

Any recommendations of colors which seem to work better than others?

Kevin

I use yellow. But I have heard many people say that they will spray paint their markers black.
Less noticeable to other people.
Sorry so short.Gotta get back to work :p

I had one that was just a line spool, which screwed onto a 20-24 oz soda bottle. Worked real well cause it was TALL, and could be seen from a distance.

Just got a new one, about 5" diameter instead of the standard 3", easier to see also. But it doesn't fit in the holder.

Had a pair of green (BPS brand) - lost one on a windy day, couldn't see it over the chop. Just got tired of circling & left it. Now I got orange; maybe I can see 'em better. Taller would be better, though...

Re: fishing marker / bouy's

I use them quite often. SkunkedAgain gave good advice in using Black markers or dark blue/green. It aids in keeping people of your drift or troll.

pretty funny acttually - I once had a few guys come right up to a maker and anchor right on it when I powered back up wind. After my buddy and I passed them on the drift with our hands full a few times we motored up, picked up the marker and left silently with smiles on our faces .. not a word exchanged - they wouldn't even look at us even though we were no more than 20' away. So it's a good idea to toss them out aways from the 'spot on a spot' that you're targeting.

jtexas - if you need taller makers try using bleach or vinegar bottles ... sounds hokey but its time tested and mother approved :p

Do they make clear ones with locator signals?

Perhaps a good tool for culling a few big ones the day before a big $,$$$.$$ tournament!

I put black spots on my orange markers. You can tell if they are spinning and releasing line easier, especially if you are going faster than a trolling speed.
I have my spots marked with the GPS. When I get to the spot with the GPS, in goes the bouy. Remember, fish are not stationary and move miles a day. Fish around the entire bouy, like mentioned.
Dman
