There are so many different types of line on the market now that I never know which to buy. I use both spining and baitcasters for bass fishing. Is there a chart somewhere that shows the pros & cons of each type?

Thanks

Old Salt

Re: Fishing line

Howdy, Salt.

There have been several discussions on this forum about line.

I prefer Power Pro braided superline, but some guys hate the limpness of it.

Try a search. You should find a lot of pros and cons.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fishing line

Oh good, something to argue about other than oil.

I fish primarily for Bass also, and sometimes Im as confused as you are, you go to the sporting goods department and look up at the fishing line display, and you just stare in amazement.

Primarily I like the original Stren Mono for my spinning outfits, and rarely use anything heavier than 10#. Its very limp, and rarely runs off the spool and makes a mess. A very good line for a good price is shakspeare floresent Mono if you can find it. For the bait casters, I do like some of the braided lines for the sensitivity and the hook set. I havnt settled on a favorite yet. Its amazingly sensitve and I am allways surprised when I feel the thump of the blade on the spinnerbait blade when using it. You can use a 25# braid and it has the size of an 8# Mono. Great for brush busting and flippin, I have never broken off using braids. Use a mono for crankbaiting as it needs the stretch so you dont rip the hooks out fighting the fish. Dont know if I answered any questions, but it was nice discusing something besides oil. :D

Re: Fishing line

I have a couple spooled with powerPro. It takes a v-e-r-y sharp knife to cut it. If you're accustomed to using your teeth, forget about it.

If you hang up a lure, forget about trying to break it. You'll snap a rod. Some guys said they've snapped rods just setting the hook.

You have to use a palomar knot - it slips right out of ordinary knots.

You have to use mono backing on the spool or else it will just slip around. That's okay because it's too expensive for filling a spool completely.

No stretch whatsoever. I busted a gear in a spinning reel once, when I started to crank but didn't notice the lure hit a little stick-up - mono would've absorbed the shock.

On the plus side, you'll never lose a fish to broken line. Tiny diameter yet very strong.

Abraison-resistant.

Zero memory.

Doesn't foul a spinning reel as quickly as mono if it gets twisted.

You'll never have to replace it. Doesn't have a "shelf-life" like mono does.

Re: Fishing line

Long Time Maxima user here, but this brand is getting really hard to find, moving to Florida in the last year I have switched to braided line on my baitcasters, and am trying the new Berkley Vanish Transition for Spinning reels. So far so good on this new line, Knot strength using the trilene knot, and line is visible above the water in sunlight and invisible under the water. Give this one a try on your lighter line reels.

I love the McCoy line. Casts good, and it is the ONLY line on the market with no memory (other than superlines). Great for spinng rigs and bait casters alike.

Uni-knot works just fine with superlines. All I ever use.

Re: Fishing line

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I'll try PowerPro on a couple of rods and see what happens. I mostly fish in canada for bass and hate it when the pike take all my tackle.

Old Salt

Re: Fishing line

I,ve had good hook up success with the Vanish but have had several break offs which provoked me to stick with the Berkley's tried and true Trilene. Other than the photochromatic properties of Transition does the new line afford any better structural integrity?

Re: Fishing line

I've used Stren all my life and with excellent results. However, I've started fishing with 6 and 8lb. test lines.
The water is pretty clear at times and there is a lot of pressure usually. With the lighter lines I'm was able to back off and make long casts. Stren just had to much stretch and it gets pretty beat up in the rocks.
I'm spooled totally with Maxima now.
It does start off with considerable memory but goes away after a few casts. It's great in the rocks and has little stretch and it's very strong.
The ultrageen matches the local waters perfectly.
