Fish like that are not common in Vermont, not even in Lake Champlain. "15-for-30+" Do you mean 30+ hookups and 15 boated? That's a good day fishing in anyone's book.

Re: fishing in milwaukee wisconsin!!!!

yes 15 boated and thursday we caught 17 and lost around 20 or so!!! i had to push threw crazy amounts of ice. my keyboard wires are messed up, so im on my sisters lap top. when i get a new one it will be way easier to post pics. we had one giant steal head 27-29 inches and big brown of the day was 32 inches and maybe 15 lbs. we in wisconsin have unarguably the best brown trout fishing in the world. eric haatija a local guide has people come from all over. one guy came from argentina and has fished everywhere in the world for browns like chile and what not. his personal best of 11 pounds was broken on his first cast with a 23 pounder! they get to be 30 lbs here but its very rare, my best is 19 pounds...

I have joked about trolling Champlain with heated fishing line to cut through the ice, but people who are fisherman know I am joking. Although I have launched at 17degrees F and discover my teleflex steering was frozen- must be a little moisture in there

Do you always catch fish that strongly, or is it just the winter bite? And to what do you attribute your losses?

If Vermont waters dished up fish in that weight class regularly, we would have to upgrade most of our rods and reels- and line! I run 6# on almost everything, with some 8#, and even my 20# braided has mostly 6# and 8# flourocarbon or mono leaders.

But my fishing buddy has bought a 19 foot Sylvan and we are planning to spend a lot of time on Champlain this summer, so between the expected Lakers and Salmon, we may experience a need for heavier tackle :) but I don't expect 30 pounders.

Na....you don't need heavier tackle. Should be able to land anything in the lake with #10 braid and a Okuma AV20 with ease.

Other than my offshore stuff I don't use anything heavier than #17 for anything. Most fish run between 5-70 lbs

Re: fishing in milwaukee wisconsin!!!!

my boat is only 16 feet so i have to wait untill the fish come inside our large harbor (inside the breakwall) so the salmon start their run vaguely in august, a good day is about 5-8 salmon, then the trout move in shortly after and school up tight. its hard to catch the trout when they are spawning, but if you find a hot school you can catch alot, but this time of year if you can find an area that has some warm water getting pumped into the lake they stack up thick and are feeding heavily, compared to the frozen over marinas, then its a day by day sorta gig. i loose alot of fish this time of year because catching every fish isnt as important, and it may sound wierd but im just jiggin for these browns and rainbows, not trolling like when they are scattered. i use a 1/4 ounce jig head, and the browns and rainbows have a thinner layer of skin over their extemely hard mouths. when i get them in the boat most of the time its alot easier just to pull the hook out with a slight amount of force. when im ine the river drifting spawn or pink steelie worms i run 30 pound power pro- overkill- yes, but you get snagged up on rocks easily, and that same pp ive had on my reel for a long time now. its made out of kevlar. otherwise i go with the 14 pound power pro, a little heavy i know but i dont loose as many lures that are 9 bucks a piece, they fall apart before i lose them to a line malfunction. most guys runspoons for salmon, but i go with snap wieghts and taildancers, or any other rapala type stickbait. youd be suprised. tie on a yellow and white one for me one time.... when you find some lakers near the bottom-where they normally are- stop for a second and drop shot a scented swinbait and drift slowly or go as slow as you can. 1 ounce bell sinker tied on to the tag end of the palomar knot (8-10 inches) this will keep the hook at a 90 degree angle off the line, youd be suprised at how many more lakers you will boat doing this rather than trolling. leaders are ok, but try a double uni-knot with a 5 foot section of your favorite floro, that helps in clear water. for kings on the big boats that go deep the some of the guides exclusively run boy blue flies with a white flasher on their down riggers. you can try the glow boy blues too in the morning sometimes thats a difference, but for salmon if your water is clear keepyour stick baits sometimes 30 feet higher than the schools that you mark, salmon can see in all directions ecept for down, they see that slight blue and chrome taildancer wiggling off in the distance and they cant help it! the new rapala x raps can be trolled up to 14 knots! they make em in the shad rap minnow rap . i havent used them quite so much this year becuase they just came out but i think they will hold up better than the balsa.. definately try the flasher fly and snap wieghted stick baits though, and try jiggin the 4 inch gulp baits... peace

oh yeah if you do decide to get new combos, you might if your running down riggers, try the gold series cabelas line counter reels! this helps you to know how deep you are when you snap wieght you lure down... other wise i troll alot with medium action poles and just add a counter if i want

I use an Okuma Magda Pro with a line counter with lead core. Haven't tried snap weights- I use dipseys, lead core, and downrigger to dive, or deep running cranks to get down.

I have several Shakespeare line counters but they don't work well- line seems to slip right through without turning the counter- ten bail revolutions winds up only being a "3" on the counter. This is with 20# braided line- haven't seen the problem on mono or fluorocarbon, but I am going to prove out the things this spring. Won't fish with something I don't trust.

Whitefish, eh? Looks like a cross between an overgrown smelt and a landlocked salmon!

Nice browns- we haven't been ice fishing yet but I know plenty of guys who have been out here. I'll get to it...:)

Re: fishing in milwaukee wisconsin!!!!

do you guys have any warm water discharges??? thats where you will catch insaine amounts of winter trout- the discharges attract baitfish.... the whities are actually a relative of the trout and are commercially harvested by the tens of thousands of pounds everyday, they just in the past 4 years started to come in shallow 40-10 fow so we can ice fish them. i think that theres just so many some come in. its amazing to watch them on an underwater camera! and i might add they are very very very good eating! just butter and salt!

Referring to Champlain, all of our regular launch sites usually get completely iced in, and most of the bays ice over as well as a lot of the lake ices over all the way to New York. There are some places off burlington that have warm water, but the launches are iced inside the breakwaters, although I have not checked it out. Discharges are several hundred yards offshore, but I don't think we have a way to launch to them.
