Re: fishing in milwaukee wisconsin!!!!
my boat is only 16 feet so i have to wait untill the fish come inside our large harbor (inside the breakwall) so the salmon start their run vaguely in august, a good day is about 5-8 salmon, then the trout move in shortly after and school up tight. its hard to catch the trout when they are spawning, but if you find a hot school you can catch alot, but this time of year if you can find an area that has some warm water getting pumped into the lake they stack up thick and are feeding heavily, compared to the frozen over marinas, then its a day by day sorta gig. i loose alot of fish this time of year because catching every fish isnt as important, and it may sound wierd but im just jiggin for these browns and rainbows, not trolling like when they are scattered. i use a 1/4 ounce jig head, and the browns and rainbows have a thinner layer of skin over their extemely hard mouths. when i get them in the boat most of the time its alot easier just to pull the hook out with a slight amount of force. when im ine the river drifting spawn or pink steelie worms i run 30 pound power pro- overkill- yes, but you get snagged up on rocks easily, and that same pp ive had on my reel for a long time now. its made out of kevlar. otherwise i go with the 14 pound power pro, a little heavy i know but i dont loose as many lures that are 9 bucks a piece, they fall apart before i lose them to a line malfunction. most guys runspoons for salmon, but i go with snap wieghts and taildancers, or any other rapala type stickbait. youd be suprised. tie on a yellow and white one for me one time.... when you find some lakers near the bottom-where they normally are- stop for a second and drop shot a scented swinbait and drift slowly or go as slow as you can. 1 ounce bell sinker tied on to the tag end of the palomar knot (8-10 inches) this will keep the hook at a 90 degree angle off the line, youd be suprised at how many more lakers you will boat doing this rather than trolling. leaders are ok, but try a double uni-knot with a 5 foot section of your favorite floro, that helps in clear water. for kings on the big boats that go deep the some of the guides exclusively run boy blue flies with a white flasher on their down riggers. you can try the glow boy blues too in the morning sometimes thats a difference, but for salmon if your water is clear keepyour stick baits sometimes 30 feet higher than the schools that you mark, salmon can see in all directions ecept for down, they see that slight blue and chrome taildancer wiggling off in the distance and they cant help it! the new rapala x raps can be trolled up to 14 knots! they make em in the shad rap minnow rap . i havent used them quite so much this year becuase they just came out but i think they will hold up better than the balsa.. definately try the flasher fly and snap wieghted stick baits though, and try jiggin the 4 inch gulp baits... peace
