My buddy and I are getting ready to fish for Coho Salmon in Lake Superior. The part of the lake that we will be fishing in is located in Northern WI. Does anyone have a proven method to catch Coho? What are the best type of lures or bait to use? Thanks in advance for replying.

In lake Ontario we use the most outlandish colors you can find. Spoons in the 3-3 1/2" range. Fish them faster than for other salmonoids & generally much closer to boat. (try something right in the prop wash.) Sometimes flasher fly combos.

Thanks Tom for the reply. We're going to have to try what you suggested here. Cold weather moving in for the next week so getting out on the water will have to wait.

We use down riggers and spoons on Lk. Huron and Lk. Michigan, anywhere from 30-200 feet down trolling spoons 2.0-2.3 MPH. This time of year they should be shallow chasing smelt and other bait fish. Find the baitfish and you will find the salmon. Good fish graph is a must!

Thanks for the reply. The smelt should be running here probably by the end of the week so it would be a good time to try and catch some Cohos.

I usually go after them with 8 or 10 colors of leadcore off the boards with Jensen #0 or 1 red or yellow dodgers with orange spoons in the size range that Tom mentioned. Peanuts instead of spoons works very well too.

Thanks for the info. Sorry I do not know what you mean by using Peanuts instead of spoons, I have never heard of this. Could you pls explain. Thank you

Peanuts are short bushy flies which resemble the smaller bait fish that are abound in spring

so much fun catching them in the river.... caught this one with a piece of peach colored wool (about the size of your pinky finger nail) thru an egg loop knot fished under a float.
