I saw on tv how they fish for cod in the north pacific. The have one very long: line with a hook every 2 feet and anchor one end and feed it out the back of the boat and anchor the end . I wonder it I could make some rig much smaller that would let me do the same for bottom fishing for cats. Maybe a hundred yards long with about 50 hooks on it....Throw the thing out and wait 5 or 6 hours and then come back and haul them in. Good idea or do you think it wont work?

You have to check your local regulations but the trotline is common. Years ago we used to jug fish for cats too.

Here is the link to the NC regulations and it does address trotlines and jug fishing http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg02_regs/pg2b.htm

That'd be my question, too. I catch plenty of catfish using a rod and reel and one hook. I'm not in the commercial fishing business, though.

What the OP described is a trotline. They work, for sure. I'm just not a meat fisherman, I guess.

I fish trot lines and Bush hooks a few times a year. To stock the freezer for family fish fry's through the summer. I've got a freezer full right now. Is catching them on a rod and reel more fun? MOST DEFINATELY, But I will have to admit bush hook fishing is some kind of fun that and jug fishing. You reach down and grab a piece of nylon tied to a 1/2" tree limb with a 30 pound Blue on the other end and once you are done wrestling that bad boy in the boat, and you tell me that it wasn't fun, I'll eat my words. REMEMBER he is not tired out when you grab that nylon twine. I personally love it. Now I don't over fish I just catch what I need, And I ALWAYS take up my hooks and trotlines when I'm done. Nothing MAKES me madder than MORONS who leave baited hooks out and forget about them, then the fish ends up dying on the line. Its great fun chasing a fish who is hook to a jug and line, especially a big one who can pull the jug down LOL, try it, its out of the norm and is a blast.

Its a must to check your state regs on this I live in western North Carolina in some areas we can use limb, trot, or jug lines but some we cann't, not that this stops people I see them all the time. I'd rather put the work in and cacth them on my pole with light line.

Recently this year, legendary Minnesota fishing guide, **** (the Griz) Gryzwinsky (sp?) caught a 54 lb. flathead catfish while fishing with a client. He was using his normal walleye rod with 6 lb. text mono on it. Took him 40 minutes, but he boated the fish.

He's putting it in for World Record status on that line weight.

I fished with him last year, and he's quite a character. If anyone could land a 54-lb. flathead with a walleye rod and 6 lb. test mono, it's him.

I saw him on tv with larry dahlberg, the hunt for big fish guy, fishing on the Mississippi river. I couldn't tell what the heck they were fishing for at first but later realized they were after 10 plus lbs walleye. They got a couple eyes that came close to the targeted weight. He has the poorest looking guide boat that I have ever seen. If Larry didn't said **** is a guide I would have never guessed. One would think that he can afford a better boat if he's constantly booked. I wonder if the cat fisherman thought of the jug line first then the saltwater guys adapted it or it's the other way around? There's lot of commercial guys over here on the Ohio river catching cats that way. They sell their catches to the pay lakes. Big, unregulated business, no taxes, no commercial license required, all under the table.

Re: Fishing for cats idea

If it was his 17' Triton jon boat, that's his river boat. You have to fish with him to understand just how good he is. I was surprised. My wife and her family bought me a day with the Griz. I called him a couple of days before the trip to find out what I should bring, and he said I should bring lunch and whatever I wanted to drink and that's it. So I did. I asked him if I should bring my own tackle. Nah...he said. I've got all we'll need.

So, I get to the ramp where I met him and there's his little jon boat. Two swivel seats. He sits at the stern and runs the tiller engine and the transom-mount Endura trolling motor.

Well, he goes to load the tackle in the boat. Two well-used 6.5 foot spinning rods and a box of jig heads. That's it. He had a bucket of small fathead minnows, too...most of them dead.

I wasn't optimistic. Then, we got into the boat and he handed me a rod. The reel was only about half full of 6 lb. test clear mono. I think it was the cheapest brand available. The rod, though, was a custom St. Croix. The reel was, of all things, a Mitchell 300 from the 70s. The line...I'm sure...was Eagle Claw mono...cheap stuff.

"Don't worry about it. It'll do the job," He said. He took an even crummier rod for himself. I checked the drag, and it was set way lighter than I would use. I started to change it. He said, "Leave that alone, unless you want to lose fish."

So, we set out for the day, moving from one spot to another. Never more than 7' deep. This was the end of July, and the river was really low.

How'd the day work out? Well, we jigged those dead minnows up and down, 6" off the bottom, all day. I caught a 30" walleye that did go over 10 lb.. I caught a 22" sauger. I caught lots and lots more walleyes and saugers. I caught white bass, smallmouth bass, channel cats, flathead cats, a couple of mooneyes, and more freshwater drums than you could count. We caught fish all day long, and in every spot we stopped.

He caught more than I did, of course, but I did way better fishing with him than I'd ever done in my life. We each had a net, and unless it was a trophy fish, the customer did his own netting.

Looks are deceiving. He's by far the best guide on the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers in Minnesota. I've fished with others and been disappointed every time.

The Griz knows the rivers. He knows where the fish are, and how to catch them. Every time. I was blown away by the depth of his knowledge. He's not much to look at, not much for conversation, and he assumes you know how to fish. Then, he puts you on fish and it's up to you to catch them. He's fishing as hard as he can, too.

Best $400 I ever spent fishing. If you ever have a chance, book him. I expect he'll be quitting in a few years. He was 68 last year. It just goes to show: you never can tell.

I watched that show with him and larry dalhberg. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover. It was kind of funny watching him and larry run around in that little john boat. They caught some whales though.

Re: Fishing for cats idea

You can't judge an angler by his boat, and that's the gospel truth. My boat is always about the ugliest darned little boat on the water wherever I fish. Funny thing is...after a little while, all the boats nearby seem to drift towards my crummy little aluminum boat...it's the boat with the bent rod in the hands of the old geezer sitting in it.

The thing about the Griz's little jon boat is that he can take it up the shallowest backwaters and into the smallest little pockets to get where the fish are. When I was with him, he had a 40 hp tiller Suzuki on the back, along with the 40 lb. thrust Endura trolling motor. The Suzuki had power trim and tilt right on the tiller handle. He was really, really good at holding a position with that boat, and with the vertical jigging style he uses to fish the river, it was an ideal setup.

There's no GPS on the boat, either. He knows where the stuff is on the river by experience...40 something years of it. He does have an older LCD locator, but I didn't see him looking at it.

Another guide I fished with on the river had a 20' bass boat, with electronics everywhere and a 250 hp outboard and a remote control trolling motor. We caught bupkis. Same price. No fish. Then, he bitched at me for not giving him a big tip. He was hungover when I got in the boat and just did a lousy job.

The Griz? He'll put you on fish every time and his jigging technique will catch them. That's what I hire a guide for. I can't do it very often, but he's worth every penny. Since that trip, I've been back on that part of the river, and his techniques worked really well. I didn't fish his spots, but places like them. I learned a lot.

Re: Fishing for cats idea

trotlining was created to catch fish as a main source of food. check state regs for how many hooks you may have on a line and what is required to set up trot lines in your state. sometimes the regs vary from river to river and lake to lake.

personally i am not a fan of trotlining or jugfishing as i do not believe they are sportsmanlike methods of catching fish. however if it ever comes to it for survival you cannot beat that method for producing protein rich food.
