am new to fishing on my own boat in the bay area. am looking for advice on striper or bluefish action my boat is only a 19 foot runabout bowrider so am not comfortable taking it to the target ships or middle grounds yet. any help would keep my father off my back as he expects to limit out any time he is near the water. have taken many charter boats or head boats and had good luck on them but it is much harder when you dont know exactly where to go and when to be there :

Dwayne, What part of Va are you from and where do you do you most of your fishing? I fish the Potomac from Point Lookout to W.W. Bridge and the Bay at least twice a week. If you want Striper action in the fall, try Morgantown below the 301 bridge. Lower Potomac around Cornfield harbor and around the point up the shore to Point no Point bell for Stripers and bluefish. I have several friends who frequently take 19 and 20 ft boats out to the target ship and middle grounds. There is great fishing along the Va coast around Reedville and Smith Point area. I am still trying to find a fishing spot that I can limit out everytime I go out. But then again, that's why it's called fishing and not catching...Good luck and bring them over the side........

Keep the bait in the Slick...

to chum slick; thanks for the reply and advice. i usually try to go out around the colonial beach va. area/ bushwood md. area of the potomac. tried to go out of deale earlier but the bay was pretty rough that day and it made for some green faces on the boat. have you tried fishing around point lookout? and have you had any luck there if so what do you recomend for a beginner. most of my fishing is done on the shenandoah river or occasionally at lake anna so the bay area is kind of new to me at least in my own boat.
p.s. what is the best speed and time for
trolling for blues or rocks.

Directly across the river from Colonial Beach is the Morgantown powerplant. Try fishing the discharge water for Rock. Fall is a great time for Rock fish in the Potomac. Try the Lower Cedar point drop offs and Swan point below the 301 bridge. My friend has been catching some nice trout from Swan point up to Goose Bay marina the last couple weekends. I didn't get a chance to get out this past weekend, been busy reworking the wood trim on my Mako getting everything ready for this fall season. As far as trolling, I troll at about 2 mph for Rock and Blues, but I troll deep with up to as much as 36 ounce weights. I don't troll often as I am a bottom bait bouncer and pitch and wind type of person.

Keep the bait in the Slick..........

good afternoon chum slick i went fishing this past sunday and ended up right about where you said. only caught three small rocks but i think that was more my fault than anything else was trying to troll to fast, and probably way too shallow. i was using 3/4 to 1oz bucktails about 100feet behind the boat over a dropoff from 15 feet to 25 feet. if i get my motor fixed(see engines) i will go back and try some more.
thank you for your help and advice and good luck with your Mako keep catching them but save some for me. see you on the water

Dwayne,
Me and a couple buds are chartering a boat this weekend out of Chincoteague for a 32 hour fishing trip for Tuna. I have never gone out with this particular boat and captain before but my friend swears by him. I'll let you know how we do and maybe I can put you on to a good fishing weekend in the future.

Keep the bait in the Slick.........

chum slick best of luck to you on your tuna trip. being that far offshore you never know what you might catch. i would be half afraid to catch somthing that much larger than me. it sure will make for some good steaks and sushi. let me know how you do. good luck again

Put it on a trailer and come to VA Beach in October. Every cast (Rebel Wincheater) will land you 20-30" Rock. November and December will grant you much bigger fish, but a little more patience. You get sick of catching these things in October. You can land over 100 in an hour if you can take them off the hook that fast. Although, they are to quick to scoop up with a net, but have thought of trying sometime.
