Hey--Kokanee salmon are hitting in my part
of the US and in order to get down to their
depth I need to use lead core line. Anyone
have any suggestions as to what reel to use,
#, etc... Any feed back would be greatly
appreciated. MB

Re: fishin' with lead core line

don't know how much this might help, since i'm not familiar with your needs, but basically, you're talkin thicker line, less to get on a spool. so what i know about using the leadcore is to get a levelwind spool that'll hold about 3x the capacity of normal fishin, since you're probably trollin, not droppin the line straight down. just my 2c worth.

My buddy in eastern Washington uses smaller Penn reels. I would reccommend calling a local tackle shop or if you are fimiliar with Cabela's mail order sporting goods call and ask to speak to a product specialist. I have ordered a lot of gear from them and they really know their "stuff".

I've used lead core on standard reels. But I am more familiar with steel line. I've done plenty of trolling with Monel and have always used Penn 49 reels for the Monel. It should also work well with lead core.

mountainboy,

Trolling for Kokanee and trout with leadcore line is the only kind of fishing I do.
Go get yourself a Penn model 209M levelwind reel. It holds 200 yards (20 colors) of 15 lb leadcore line. The 209M is a good quality reel for $50-$60.

mountainboy,

I use a 7 1/2 ft. Cabela's depthmaster trolling rod. I splice about 10-14 yds of 10 lb test mono on to the leadcore and troll with any kind of bright orange fluorescent lure. Some people like to tie on pop gear but I never had a problem just trailing the lure.

Hey Buffalo 66..........I too live in Colorado. Where do you do your Koke fishing? I do most of mine at Blue Mesa and Elevenmile. My favorite Koke spot is at the Flaming Gorge reservoir on the Utah side. It has superb Koke fishing!!

CHUCKB1 Blue Mesa is my home ground.Do you know where Copper Resort is? Its that state owned park right before the lake.Right across form that, my dad owns that place on top of the hill.My dad met the man who made the **** night lure.He told him to try splicing 40ft.of mono. it works well for us. In fact when we snag up and brake of some of the mono we retie the mono. back to 40ft. mountainboy i have a pretty net way of splicing that mono to the lead.CHUCKB1 if you are ever on the way to Blue M. give me a email i let you know what lures are hot and how many colors down.Buffalo '66
