Fun to catch, bull red.

How to rig for bull reds:

Rig your surf rod with 20# Trilene XT, a redfish rig (available at any fishing store), a circle hook, and a spider weight.

Bait; live mullet ( 7" range) or cut mullet.

Wade out & cast between the 2nd & 3rd sand bar, bring back & put in PVC rod holder. Check cut bait every 30 min. & check live every 45 min.

Note: Use a reel that will hold at least 200 yds. of 20# line.

For those that fish the along the Gulf Coast, much of the drill involves wade fishing. Wade fishing is probably the most most effective way to put a few fish on the stringer this time of year. If you are new to wade fishing there are a few things you need to know and have to be properly prepared.

Here is a list of items that are basic needs of wade fishing. First will be a pair of chest waders. Rubber is fine, but neoprene is much more comfortable. Stocking foot waders with neoprene booties over them. They are really light. Next you need your rod and reel. A 7-7/12 ft. medium action casting rod and a good level wind reel will cover just about all applications for wading along the Gulf Coast. A quality wading belt is real handy. Use one that has a rod holder, needle nose pliers sheath and a quick release stringer holder. A life vest is also a real good idea, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area you are wading. A long (15-20 ft.) stringer with a float on the end or a donut with mesh net type stringer is necessary. Measuring fish while wading can be tricky, a good suggestion might be to put one of those 36 inch "rod rulers" on your rod.

Now you are set to go wading, and if you gear up correctly, you'll look like a veteran and not a rookie. This is to say that if you can't catch fish, at least look like you can. Hook 'em!
