Okay, I'm an old codger and fished when fishfinder meant looking for seagulls diving on baitfish....
Are fishfinders worth it? Do they work?
Recommendations? - cheapest ones that work?

There is no such thing as a "fishfinder". You still got to find them but they have some amazing equipment now days to show them to you once you do find them. They all work but as to which one I guess the type of fishing you do and where you do it would have a lot to do with your selection.

My current project will get a Humminbird (older).

I bought it at a garage sale for $17.00. The screen was a little messed up. I bought one on ebay for $6.00 and put the two together, works great.

I have another one on my good boat.

It marks fish and shows their depth. It doesn't make me a great fisherman but it does help me catch more fish.

I use it for small lake fishing.

Okay, asking which is the best fish finder is synonymous to asking which vehicle is the best. Everybody has their favorite and reasons for what they chosen for their fish finder. And that fact is most any one of them would work once you understand how to use one. You have to interpret what you see on the screens to be able to utilize what they can do. And once that learning curve is understood, then you can find fish using them. Seriously the only difference between any of them is the additional options on them. Like buying a car and one has power seats and another has rearview camera. Both will take you where ever you want to do, they just have different option you can use. And the more options the higher the price. So my suggestion is to pick something in your price range and start using it and get familiar with how it works. Then the next one you look at will be looked at with more understanding of capabilities... But no fish finder from any manufacturer will make you an instant successful fish catcher....

Right now you can buy a low end, but still very good, color fish finder for under $100.00, it will work well enough for most fishing, I assume you don't have a 36' offshore fishing boat by the question.

Learning to use it correctly will determine whether you find fish or not.

I do mostly wreck fishing so I could not live without my fish finder. Even with exact GPS coordinates, you still need a visual of the wreck to fish it correctly.
