What are your thoughts about these things and what type/brands have you used? We release 99% plus of the fish we catch and have been looking at these lip gripper things trying to decide which ones are easier on the fish.

boga grip by far. They are not cheap but they have a reliable scale and are super durable. Go check one out at a local dealer.

Those have always been on my toy list, maybe someday. Till then I will have to continue estimating those 3/4 lb fish at 2-3 pounds

I understand you can send the scale in and have it certified also...Just in case we ever catch the fish we all hope to one day.

OK then what about plain old scale's? should you hook them under the gill plate of put the hook through the lip?

if you release 99% of the fish you catch, i wouldn't mess with the gills. i also just caught the size of fish you are dealing with- the berkley or bass pro shop models should be fine for you. the complaints with them are the tongs not opening wide enough, but that's for 30-50 lbs striper.
