I need a fish finder for a charter boat, which will be doing a mixture of bluewater trolling and bottom fishing. I want it to be colour, have temperature, and plotting, basically I want something pretty good. I know nothing about electronics, but is there any particular model which charter boats go for, or one model that's reconised as being the best?

Re: fish finders

Check this site out. I run a CVS106 MKII on one of my boats and love it. SiTex

Ditto on the Si-Tex brand... I'm running a cvs 210...The only thing I don't like about it is it's not waterproof..

Furuno and Lowrance also make top of the line stuff...

www.furuno.com

www.lowrance.com

Re: fish finders

Sim
Most of the party boats out here use Furuno, but they use a seperate GPS or Loran C unit. Out here the normal fishing depth has been 250 to 400 feet for Rockfish. If your fishing grounds are that deep you need two things to see fish. Your unit needs to have a 50khz transducer and at least 600 watts RMS power. If you do not fish as deep as 400 feet the Lowrance X15ci or X16ci may work pretty good for you. The Lowrance units only have a 4 times zoom so in 400 feet at 4 times zoom each pixel on a X15 = 3.5 inches, so to get at least 2 pixcel fish needs to be 7 inches deep or a big rock fish. Also Lowrance very good at marketing. You should know if you want a water speed sensor that is extra, also second and third temp sensor for live well and bait tank also extra and at a steep price. If you do fish that deep or deeper I would go with Furuno. The Furuno has zoom but also has Bottom Lock or Bottom track. This alows you to lock on the bottom and up as many feet as you want. So you can set it to bottom and up 10, 20, or 30 feet and this will give you a good wiew of the Rock fish.
