My finder works but gives false readings. Can the transducer be replaced, or does the whole unit need to be replaced. Is it difficult to replace these units?

Re: fish finder

Have you tried adjusting the transducer to a different angle? Sometimes they will give false or no reading at all if it's not pointed straight down Is this a transom mount or through hull tranducer? They can be replaced if defective, but unless you really whacked something with it or a wire is cut, they usually don't go out. What brand and model is it?

If you get a build up of oil film on the transducer it can cause bad readings too, try cleaning with dish soap. Unless the unit is a real expensive one or relatively new you would usually be better off to just get a new one.

CTD is right. If it is defective, you might as well get a new finder, as the transducer alone can cost from $60.00-$80.00 alone. That could be applied to a new, more modern unit. I would still suggest you check the angle of the tranducer, as it is critical for proper operation.
