Just finished fixing up my 73 reinell with a 302Mercruiser.
Took it out and had a blast.:D
Trim tabs seemed to be reallllly slloow or I guess busted.
Steering was kinda ok...I think I need one of those spinning knobs..
The big problem I didnt see was the alt. waterpump belt doesnt line up:confused:... the crank seems to stick out a bit too far and offset the belt which at WOT causes your belt to break..
I was able to get back using some nylon string I just happen to buy that day:p

My thought is to junk the waterpump for an electric one and just try and fix the alignment of the alt. instead of trying to fiddle with the pump
Only thing is the 302 is a rebuild not the original engine so trying to fit a electric might be a hassle

You can see the water pump is off I believe the alt. is too but the picture doesnt show it

Might just have the wrong pulley on it. Pull it off and go to a junk yard and see if you can find a deeper one.

Maybe it's the wrong water pump? I think I have heard on some SBC's there were some "longer and shorter" ones.......just a thought!

That's a good thought.
I just checked the pulleys again, and yes the waterpump is the only one off.
Where do I find the year of this motor to get the right pump?

you don't want the year of the motor -being a rebuild, it could be 1960s to 1980's

You want the year of your other belt driven components.... so probably 1973 going by your signature.
assuming the other stuff is original to the boat.

Just get the circ pump that Mercruiser used in 1973
Could just be the pulley - the pump behind it might be fine - but it might be automotive so pull it off and see if the impeller is bronze or tin.
