well, boat went in the water on friday and i had to take advantage of the nice weather on saturday. headed out on the bay for some trolling. was happy to get 4 lines running for about 2 hrs with no crosses or tangles. no bites, but didn't really expect to find anything. drank a 6 pack and enjoyed the weather. gear and boat seem ready for the trophy season when it starts :)

Re: first trip of the season

We went out yesterday also, winds were 20-25 knots. I caught my usual limit of stingray and trash fish.

It was so rough when I was pulling in the anchor I popped a rib head out which made breathing a little difficult,

but I still fished for another 4 hours. It was just good to be out on the water.

:) Snapperbait!!!
While I spent my time in the Bahamas I booked three charters. The first two were cancelled because of high winds. The third was a no show.
Been going there the last twevle years and this was the first time that I couldn't go fishing because of the wind.

Today was my first time this year as well.
I did something I never did before. After launching the boat I moved her right next to the remaining ice on the lake and lowered the anchor on the ice.I caught a bakers dozen of crappies anchored to an iceflow. Not bad for a first time!

Went out yesterday, not the first off the season, but this is Florida, got some whiteing, sea trout, sheapheads, and no catfish or stingrays, the way I like it.

I feel for ya Fly Rod... Last week would have been a great time to make the crossing to the west end in a dingy.. not! :p

Seems like, for the last month or more, every time I get a chance to go, the seas get snotty... Oh how I can't wait for the summer days when it's glassy...

Seas got somewhat flat late yesterday afternoon after i dedicated myself to working around the house, and it was'nt too awful bad early today except for some morning rain..

Report says seas are building again.. :( Oh goody!

Homer, pulling in a stingray can sometimes feel like you are yanking the whole ocean floor up or hooked on an oyster reef until you get them close to the boat. However the last one I caught Saturday was hooked in the butt somehow had no idea what I caught, only that it was a biggun. I yelled for a gaff instead of a net and was really disappointed when I got him to the boat.

Stingray are very good eating. The only usable part is the wings. After you skin them you take a cookie cutter and cook them the same way you would scallops and thats exactly how they taste. Many don't realize that most restaurants use skate/stingray instead of scallops. I just don't want to clean them.

As far as what they eat I think its safe to say any live bait. I've never caught one using a lure not even in the butt.

Flyrod-
You should have gone to Quepos in Costa Rica. I was there the weekend before your Bahama trip and the weather was spectacular. Caught 12 sails and a dolphin on a two day trip. We had 13 sails up Sat but only got 4 to the boat!! Better ratio on Sun. Great place if looking for saltwater action.
