I am fishing Flaming Gorge in Northern Utah this weekend. I have a boat, trolling motor, fish finder, pole holders, and "standard" rods and reels. I inherited a HUGE asortment of tackle recently as well. I DONT have lead line, rigger, or trolling poles. Can I troll with this gear and how would I rig my line? I'm not going for any world record catches, just catch a fish or two this weekend. any and all responses would be greatly appreciated.

Re: First time trolling

We're going to need more information. Such as what motor, what size boat, and what type of fish are in the lake. To be honest if you're not somewhat expierienced at trolling it can be difficult to figure out speeds and such. You may be better off using the fish finder to locate a school of fish and then drifting over the area while dropping a crawler harness, jigging, or just casting into the area.
As for rigging your line that depends more on what type of fish you're going after or are present in the lake. Some will require more extensive rigging than others.

Welcome aboard, Ryan.

A stiff rod helps, but you could tie on a light weight lure, or wieghted plastic worms, and move along at a slower clip.

You wanna keep one eye on the finder to see where the fish are hanging out... (What's your finder?) and then double back when you locate a clump of fish.

Another option would be to drift with live bait along a channel or chunk rock shore. Drifting is a nice way to while away some hours unless the lake is overpopulated with Sea Doo's.

I forget the official number of different ways to rig a trolling line...but it's something like infinity plus a few others.

My favorite rig is a Rap shad, or fat A tied at the end, with a short plastic worm tied a foot above. Bright day: bright worm. and versa visa.
These run about 14' deep, with 100 yards of line out, at 1K rpm.

Having any wieght on the line is what's going to stress your rod or reel or both.

While trolling you also want to keep an eye peeled for surfacing fish and have a casting rod, rig with a spook or something top water, at the ready. You gotta be quite while sneaking up on them...which in my case means they run off before I can get in casting range.

Man, I am all over the place here. How about this?
What's your rod "action": light, med, heavy?
What kind of fish does flamin goerge have?
Your visa number and exp. date?
And has it been raining alot lately?

Bobber

Re: First time trolling

There are two basic ways to go about it>

Experiment ( cuz asking directions is well the same as when driving someplace new) In this case the way you troll will be discovered by you by brining way too much stuff and trying different lures at different speeds/ weight combos. You can judge depth by line angle.

Ask at the gorge area tackle shop or the fellow anglers onhsore what's in the lake and what type of trolling lures/ depths are working there LATELY.. Most anglers are happy to be considered an expert.

Iv'e trolled freshwater for years and my technique and lure selection changes seasonally and from hole to hole.
tight lines to you.
dave who now is saltier than before cuz blues fight harder than trout.

Re: First time trolling

Thanks for ALL the great responses everyone. I ended up asking the ol' lady running a tackle shop at the marina and watched a lot of other fishing boatS. Basically, we went where everone else was going. in six hours of fishing total, my wife and I caught about 15 trout. some real fighers in a couple of them. we did everything. still fished over the schools, and trolled with some pop gear and needle fish, and rapalas. My trolling motor is a 4 horse power, which pooped out on us about halfway through the first day. I think it is 4 horse power, it was a hand-me-down from my grandpa who just passed. Anyway it was a great time. I just need to invest in a shade cover for the thing. THANKS AGAIN ALL!!!!!

Re: First time trolling

Most of my time is spent trolling..helps me cover more area. Muskies and other bigger game fish like speed when the weather gets to cookn..slower speeds i will do a drop-shot with a floater for the eyes and other fins...experiment with your speed. I sometimes will go 3-5 mph when i go after gator eyes, but will use a heavier rig for these fins...just have some fun...once you start losing the biguns you will join the club with the rest of us.....good luck
