First time on the water today in our new boat and power trim wont go up..Motor runs with switch in up and down positions but the motor wont trim up. Had to release valve and pull up manually to get home . I added fluid to it , but that didnt help. The motor will trim down fine but will not hold up or trim up. The trim had a leak around the manual release valve screw to begin with but the guy I bought it from said it has always done that and he just added fluid. Was wondering if it may have got air in and if I just need to try and purge it and keep adding fluid or if it may be something more serious. It all worked fine until I put it in the water today. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

Most trims that leak fluid also can suck in water. That screws up the operation. Some of the manual release screws are made to be turned 1/4 turn or less. If he was giving it a full turn or more that also screws up the works. Several turns on that screw can wipe out the seal and yup that also screws up the works. Do a search on the trim. I would do it but don't know what engine?

Power Tilt n Trim is a high pressure unit.Leaks are bad...air tight is what you want. You may find its just a bad o ring on cap/screw.Mine had 3 O rings.I would also be changing fluid after you fix leak.Post photo/engine, year ,model etc

need to know year and horsepower. some engines even had two or three different trim systems for same engine. a small photo is worth a thousand words.

Re: first time out in new boat...power trim wont go up

Thanks for the advice. The motor is 1993 Mercury 115, Has a single ram trim pump. Fluid was leaking out of the manual release valve when I bought it and I cranked it a little tighter thinking that would help. I may have shot the seal then. It worked fine even when it was leaking, but as soon as I put it in the water it quit. I talked with the local marina and they said they could rebuild it for 400 bucks, but that was when it was just leaking, now it wont go up.Do you guys think a rebuild would fix it , I dont know exactly how a trim pump works, so I was wondering if it could be something more serious , because it will trim down , motor runs in up and down, but it will not hold the motor and it will not pick it up. Also it doesnt make a hissing sound anymore when u open the cap. Sounds like it has no pressure any longer, but like I said I dont know anything about power tilt and trim. I will try anything that u guys suggest!

Besides the leaking and all that you mentioned, do you know if the up solenoid is putting voltage on the pump? Recalling the pumps have a blue, green, and black wires. Blue or green is (12v input for) up, opposite color (12v input for) down, and black common. The motor is common to up and down. So if the thing won't move at all, I'd say you lost power from your up solenoid.

Tip: Blue wire is up (sky color), and green wire is down (grass color).

First fix cap before anything.Take out cap and drain system into pan.Check Oring on cap and cap itself.Replace or fix. Most merc dealers will have the parts.
Engine must be in full up position when topping up,then trim up and down a few times to purge...then top up again and repeat tiil it wont take any more fluid.
