So I got my first boat a few days ago and I'm very excited to get of the bank to fish.

Boat is a 77 sterncraft with a 140 mercruiser and is in ok shape. I got the boat mainly for fishing with my family. Has a few problem that I've already began to fix. Oil had a ton of gas in it because it had an aftermarket fuel pump with no fuel pressure regulator. Added a regulator and new fuel lines and flushed the oil system. Took about 15 quarts of oil to totally flush it and get the white oil out. Changed the lower unit oil and it didn't have any water in it.

Motor starts and runs pretty well idles a little high around 1k rpms. Carb seems to be missing a spring for the butterfly flap so it sits wide open. My temp guage is the only guage that does not work and has my main concearn right now. I can't seem to find it on the motor and where I think it would be there may be a bolt plugging it.

My next concearn is doing a water pump rebuild on the lower unit and putting another thermostat in it. Do yall know of a place I can get a book on the boat and motor?

Look at the second post from the top- Tech info for DYers. Mercruiser is listed at the top. and that will have all the info you need. Boat mfgs usualy dont have manuals, just the engine mfg. There should be a sending wire for the temp gauge on the head. A infra red temp gun from harbor freight or sears etc is a cheap insurance policy and can be used for checking wheel bearings along with a bunch of other stuff along with verifying your gauge is working.. Good to have one in your aresenal.

The only manual I see was for the 80s and up. Do they have them for 60s and 70s merc motors?
