Pull up a chair, grab a drink and your reading glasses. It's a long one (would you expect less from me?)

I never launched a boat from a trailer before today. I just bought a new to me boat, and had to launch it to be able to get it to my dock. I spent time last night reading about launching, and watched some videos on youtube, to help prep myself. I had my wife and a buddy with me, so I felt a little comfortable having the extras hands. It's a 22' SportCraft WA, which while not huge, can be a little intimidating for a first time. Would rather have had some experience on my 16', but never needed to launch it. Had to rent a U-Haul truck for this, as I don't have a tow vehicle.

So we get to the ramp, I watch a couple of other guys, and figure it's now or never. I was really proud of myself! Back in perfectly, and when I saw the stern floating, tapped the brakes, and she slide off like a greased pig. Wife and friend tie her to the dock, and wife takes over the truck/trailer to head back to the house, and me and my buddy get in, she starts right up, and off we go. I'm thrilled with myself. I feel like a million bucks. About 5 minutes into the journey (just taking the boat up to our dock about 6 miles from the ramp), I give the wheel to my friend, and do a once over on everything, t o see how the new girl is doing. Start at the stern, then up to the bow, and when I come back around.... I see water going out the scuppers. I'm like... where's that coming from??? The engine compartment! I lift the doghouse, and she's flooded! Aww F! Aww double F!!!!! I forgot the plug! All week I was reminding myself about the plug; don't forget the plug, don't forget the plug... I look in the cup where the PO kept the lug, and it's not there. Bilge pump isn't keeping pace with the water coming in, and I'm freaking out. Not panicking, just pissed at myself. So I figure I'll hit the throttle to help keep the water from entering. Good idea. But about 2 minutes later, the engine dies. Bilge is wirking overtime, water is now starting to reach the cabin floor. Dammit, where is that plug?!?! I tear up the cabing looking for the plug, empty every box, bag, and anything else that could contain a plug (cabin looked like a tornado hit it), but I can't find it. Look in the cup again, nope. Grrr, I must have, for some idiotic reason, brought it home (maybe so I wouldn't forget it) is what I figure. We're now windblown into the mango (sic) trees, nose first. Water is still coming in. My only thought was to go overboard, and plug it with my finger, so that's what I did (see pic). Off in the distance, I see the Tow Boat US boat. I'm friends with the Capt. Used to keep my 16' at the same marina that he's out of, so I tell my buddy to flag him down. He comes over, sees me in the water, and says "What're ya doing in that boat?" Tell him I got a new boat, but forgot the plug. He busts up laughing.... I've got wakes crashing over me, a tow guy laughing at me, and my buddy taking pictures of me in the water. Nice.

Tow guy tosses something to my friend, and says, tear some off, and have him stick it in the hole. It was a Nerf Football of all things. And it worked! Got back in the boat, and checked again for the plug. Saw the wrench for the plug, and realized it must be with the wrench, and it was.... It was in a corner of a side compartment, and I just didn't see it before. Put it on, and give a big sigh of relief.

At this point, the bilge has been working overtime, with the engine off. Could not get the engine to stay running. Now the batteries are starting to drain. I open the livewells (there are 3 of them, 2 on either side aft, and one forward), and the 2 aft are full of water. But water wasn't coming from topside or the engine compartment. The valve must be open. Great. We tear off more of the nerf, and plug the fills, and start bailing. It's helping, but still taking on water. Tow guy had to go, as he had been on his way to another distressed (and paying boater), but said he'd be back to check on us. There is a shutoff valve for the livewells somewhere below the engine, but I still can't find it. Burnt my arm on the engine trying to find it.

Finally get the engine running, but only at idle speed (I'm thinking water in the fuel, or a spark issue, but that's a different post). We nurse our way back to the dock at idle speed where the wives were waiting for us, and get onto dry land, and go home....

So I'm the newest member of the No Plug Club. I'm also keeping a Nerf football onboard, with hopes of not needing it ever again....

I keep 3 spare plugs on my boat, plus the bilge pump is wired through a panel with a BIG RED LIGHT that tells me the pump is running. That pump switch is ON BEFORE I enter the water, so if I forget the plug and water starts coming in, I just drive the car and trailer back up the ramp and fit the forgotten plug.
No harm, no foul....

My scariest moment was taking on water (lots of it) 30 nautical miles out to sea... Turned out to be a hole worn in the bottom of the exhaust Y-pipe by a broken shutter flap...... Mr Mercruiser's bad design..... Only scared us because friends in the other boat had just been fighting a 12' shark and lost it!

HMMMM..... I think I am seeing a Nerf football in my near future!!! LOL Not really, I have, I believe, 5 spare plugs in my helm compartment. The one I use normally goes in a container on my key fob for the boat keys.... And I am extremely anal, to the point I check the plug like 5 or 6 times before I launch, but then again, I only launch in cold ocean water and I don't think I would be hanging by my swimstep with my finger in the hole very long:rolleyes:

We have spare plugs all over the place. Every time we open a locker there is a plug sitting there.

Give your buddy credit for the nerf ball. Thats a great idea, and a multi-tasker!!

At least it is out of the way now.:p Trouble free the rest of the season.

We had a plug get pulled out by the tube rope. My brother took his can coozy, rolle it up and pluged the hole. Now, not only do I carry spare plugs, I also keep several coozies on board.

With my luck I'd jump in with my cell phone still in my pocket... Hope that didn't happen to you!

And yeah, the Nerf/coozie idea is phenomenal!

Beefer-

As I was reading this, I just did not know where you were going with the Nerf thing- Hilarious! Glad you were okay and that you guys got a laugh out of it, clearly the photo of you? in the water , in a bad situation, shows yer good nature.

I have found a tightly wound bit of terrycloth works in that bilge drain. Oh wait, how would I know that???:D

p.s. I saw a Dirty Jobs episode ( I love that show) where they were clearing out dead half sunk abandoned boats out of the waterways, and used bits of those floating Noodles to plug the holes in the boats in order to pump them out.

Wow, that is one hell of a story, glad it all worked out in the end.

I can't say that I have ever even removed the plug from my boat since it's stored indoors

They were actually doing the opposite on that episode! They used the noodles to plug the exhaust holes to keep water IN! Environmental conditions, apparently can't let the water that was in the engine just dump out.

I've always kept my boat(s) either in the water, or at a hi 'n dry, where they launch for me, so the plug is not any part of my routine. All week before the launch, I was trying to embed into my brain to remember the plug. So much for that...

The funniest thing about being in the water, was that I thought I was in about 6-8' of water, so when I first got in, I was holding onto the swim platform to keep myself up and stationary. Did that for the first 5 minutes or so, then I realized I was in about 2-3' of water. I got pummeled by wakes while I was holding on.

I did remember to take my cell phone, keys, etc. out of my pockets, but forgot about the wallet in my back pocket. :p

Yeah, any change in routine can be bad! I usually keep the boat keys in the boat glove box, but one time I put them in the center console of the tow vehicle before leaving the house.. I couldn't find the keys when we were in the prep area at the ramp, I looked for 20 minutes before I remembered where they were. I keep an extra set of boat keys under one of the bow seats now!

Re: First Launching, and a Nerf Football....

quick fix for a sudden leak: put a piece of plastic/canvas over the hole on the outside; the water pressure will plug it. I saw this technique in a sailing book, where if you got a hole inthe hull from a rock or piling, you take a sail and run it under the hull with ropes, as if you are making a sling. Of course it's not water tight but better than a hole! So a piece of a tarp or seat cover laid across the hole FROM THE OUTSIDE will slow it down enough for the pumps to handle and give you time to fix it right. A large baggie would handle a forgotten bilge plug.

Any time you can, plug a leak from the outside.

Another (Quick Fix) is a zip-lock sandwich bag. Keep the zip-lock portion on the outside. Allow the rest of the back to be drawn in the plug hole and fill with water. Once the bag is completely through and full of water, zip it shut. The water pressure inside the bag will seal the hole and the zip portion won't go through the hole.

Great story and good to know these things. We keep 3 extra plugs on ours. I also like the extra key lesson. Good luck with the new toy and getting that motor running great again.

Re: First Launching, and a Nerf Football....

Whenever my bilge turn on I have a light in the deck that will come on. Of course that will be of no help if we are floating or swiming as we generaly do. I have consider installing a buzzer. BTW, my pump button is always in auto. Never comes out of it.
