I want to quote Neil Eskelin...

When we shake hands it's a natural friendly gesture. However, the custom originated in the Middle Ages. When two men met they extended their right arms and shook hands to show they
did not intend to use their swords. It was a display of courtesy and goodwill.

The practice of good manners started even earlier. In the nineteenth chapter of Genesis, it is recorded that when two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom, Lot "rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself."

For many, being polite has become a lost art. Someone once commented, "I don't recall your name. But your manners are familiar."

Etiquette is not limited to knowing how to make a proper introduction or learning which knife or fork to use at a formal banquet. Courtesies reflect your basic values of honesty, fairness, caring and accountability.

Charles and Anne Winters, who head a national etiquette training program say, "Practicing good manners is how we treat others with honor, dignity and respect."

There are hundreds of rules for proper behavior, but almost all of them are based on your response to this question: Do I think of others more than myself?

Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Re: First Impressions

Bueno, Warhorse!

An excellent post. Thank you.

I would like to see some ideas on Bulletin Board etiquette. I sometimes get miffed at what I consider poor etiquette here, and feel a bit guilty because I try to point them out, perhaps being impolite myself.

Suggestions? :)

Gents,

Good thoughts, I like JB's suggestion.

JB, I don't think you have been rude on this board. Very direct, yes, but not rude.

One starts to see the different personalities come out as one to reads more and more posts. It's really quite fascinating

Re: First Impressions

I can't help it I get ticked when someone who has no clue gets all self rightious. I am too set in my ways to worry about hurting someone's feelings by pointing out thier mistake. I have hurt many a persons feelings online. BTW this is by no means a way of saying I have all the answers but I have seen a lot in 32 years. I do know I still have a lot to learn though.

Re: First Impressions

We have to remember that the Internet is not a society of clones.

Everyone from bluebloods to hillbillies address the same issues, oftentimes drawing radically different opinions, based on their personalities, backgrounds and experiences.

The Internet is different from face-to-face conversation or debate, in that people tend to be more opened and opinionated. Other times, some people are new or just don't get it.

The Internet is not a perfect medium, but is of great value and is the best mankind has to offer.

Most issues are best handled with basic manners, a little compassion and some thick skin. :)

Re: First Impressions

I admit it I have a problem I think faster than I spell or type. I have always been that way even when writing with a pen or pencil.

Re: First Impressions

in the imortal words of bartles and james "thanks for your support". i was'nt to rough on the poor lad. i bit my lip a few times. my grandfather said that i should always give respect FIRST, even sometimes when it is not deserved. i have lived my life that way and been kicked a time or to, but i can and always will hold my head up and be proud of the way i live my life. nice guys may finish last sometimes but they earn evey ounce of respect given to them. being a gentalman lets you know who your freinds are and can defuse a conflict to the point of resolution in everyones benifit. plus i usally don't end up looking like the a$$ when its all said and done. do unto others as you would have them do unto you. words to live buy. just think what the wourld would be like if everybody followed this... pakistan would not be threatnen india with nukes, there would be 3,000 less graves in new york city and no one would be getten shot over a few bucks for drug money. no prisons,no wars and nooooooo water roaches(rude ones anyway)
derwood. :) :)
