It was a long time ago. It would be great if life was that easy now.

Never went past algebra. I can cipher in my head just fine, but advanced mathematics and I don't get along.

We homeschool our kids ... basically I get to take calculus all over again. I think I'm doing better this time though :D

Re: first day of school

lol have my first calculus test tomorrow.

High school, right? I think it's great that they teach calculus in high school now.

I was 37 years old and on my 3rd go round for a bachelors when I took calculus for the first time. I happened to draw a very rigorous professor who gave multiple choice exams that demanded a deep and thorough knowledge of trig and trig identities. This I did not have. Got a D and had to retake in the fall quarter since I was a math major. I got hold of two trig texts and spent the month of August working trig problems 8 hours a day. Turned out the prof in the fall was much less demanding and I could have easily gotten a C and probably a B from him without knowing that I didn't know anything. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

You could usually pick out graduate students taking courses from the 1st prof. They had this pale, haunted look.

I had calculus in high school in 1978 and did well (I had good results in any class with a cute teacher). I haven't used it again since my P-Chem II
class junior year in college.

Oh, man!! Calculus sings!!

Only with calc can you understand things in motion or transition from an engineering view.

Re: first day of school

I agree on teaching calc in high school... The highest my HS taught was advanced math, which really wasn't calculus at all, not even pre-calc. A calculus class in HS kinda gives you an upper hand when you get to college, might can skip the pre-calc class altogether. Probably doesn't hurt on those ACT and SAT scores either.

Calc is a must if you intend on majoring in many of the sciences or engineering.

JB, I don't think I've ever seen anybody that ecstatic about calculus since my calculus professor!! Wait, was that you???

Re: first day of school

yup, it makes it even better that the teacher has an accent that nobody can understand and she mumbles lol.....i know she knows her stuff and can teach but
oh well.

i'm also taking physics. it's ok lol....haven't gotten into learning it yet. the third day of school is tomorrow.

i'm currently taking calc AB but i don't think ill be doing calc BC till college. i can but ehhh. junior year! let's do it! lol

i'm really worried about calc because my pre-calc class wasn't the greatest....i had a teacher that was basically a gorilla....most ridiculous.

I took ap AB as a junior and ap BC as a senior and still took into calc in college and it was still hard as heck.. and my calc teacher was a crazy russian nasa scientist... I called her stalin. I happened to really like physics... maybe you will too...
