I am looking at a 2005 Maxum 1800 SR3 (4.3L) for my first boat he is asking $15,200, since I am a first time buyer what should I look for, is it worth the extra money to get a marine survey done on it, should I wait till the spring to buy a boat what is the best time to buy a used boat.

We will be just using it for cruising the St. Lawrence River, no kids involved

Thanks

Re: First Boat

Fall is the best time to buy. Spring is the best time to sell.

Get a surveyor that is SAMS or NAMS certified - it will be worth the $$$

If you are new and uneducated on boats then yes I would have a survey done. There are many things that can be hidden or overlooked when buying a boat. The best time to buy a boat is when everyone is putting them away for the winter. Spring is when everyone wants a boat so the prices are usually higher. Things to check (not a complete list) Engine oil, check level and color before it is run and again after it has been run long enough to warm up and open the thermostat-10 to 20 minutes. Looking for any water in the oil, compare oil level and color (milky means water, run from boat). Listen for noises that seem loud or strange. Especially from the drive or transom area (gimbal bearing/u-joints). ALWAYS start and run with water, muffs or in the water. Anytime you run dry you damage the impeller and the inside of your exhaust connectors. Even 15 seconds can cause damage. Check all systems and operate all. Something as simple as the bilge blower can be a pain to replace or cost a bunch to have done if it's in some out of the way place. ANY thing found not up to par should be used as a bargaining point. Sea Trial, Sea Trial, Sea Trial. Can't stress this enough and not 15 minutes on the water, at least a half hour and an hour or longer is a much better. Some things don't show up right away. And retest everything after your sea trial.

Re: First Boat

My previous boat was a 2008 Maxum 1900SR3, with 4.3L that I bought new. It was a great boat and I was 100% satisfied but I didn't have to worry about how a previous owner maintained it, etc. I am by no means an expert, but based upon what I bought mine new for and got for it when I traded it in, I would say the asking price might be a bit high - just depends upon your location and condition of the boat and what you are willing to pay for it. I would concur with those that suggest you get a survey and certainly demand a sea trial. Good luck!

Re: First Boat

That sounds like a great first time boat. It is unfortunatly at the age where it could go either way. I've seen beat up 7 year old boats and like new 7 year old boats. As for price I see you are up in Canada where your economy is controlled to a greater extent with among other things exorbitant minimum wage. In other words you pay more for everything. I certainly wouldn't give 15,200 usd for that boat but I bet it is a good deal for you. I wouldn't hesitate to negotiate hard given whoever is selling it likely has a good reason to do so.

Contacted the seller again he has no knowledge of the history of the boat says he bought it from a dealer at the beginning of the season bought it in another province so don't know how much the dealer will help, I guess I will have to continue looking
