First boat question

Hi, Im out looking for my first power boat. Ive mainly been looking for smaller boats 16-19 foot bowriders and such. Of course Ive been looking on the cheap, willing to do some work if need be. Ive come across a 1989 23 foot Imperial cabin (cuddy?) cruiser. Im afraid that this may be too big a boat for my first boat. It will be trailered and launched at the local ramp each time it will be used. Normally I would not even be looking at such a large boat but the price is right. $1500 with no problems, running great (305, v8), trailer included. I still have to see the boat in person but the pictures look great and the seller swears that its all good and water ready. I dunno, I will have to see it to believe it. But, do you think that a 23 foot boat is too large for a first boat? Will launching it and maneuvering it be substantially more difficult that say a 17 foot bowrider? Is my concern justified or is it no big deal. The boat looks huge on the trailer and it kinda intimidates me a bit. What do you think? And why is there no Imperial forum here. He listed the boat as a Chapparal but it clearly is an Imperial as it says so right on the side and looks just like others that Ive seen on the web. Are they the same? I dont see any Imperial boats after 1992 or so. Are they not made anymore? Sorry for my long post.

That is a pretty big boat. What are you going to use for the tow vehicle?

Re: First boat question

Thats another concern. I dont think Im gonna be towing that to the ramp with the mini van:D. I have access to an f150 to pick it up with but would need to get a truck to actually use the boat. So, you concur that thats a big boat then. I guess I will pass on it then. It just seemed like a good price. Thanks.

an 89 for 1500 w/o problems. that i don't believe.......good idea to pass on it.
a 16-19' boat would be better for a 1st boat anyways, though do go for as much hp as ya can get.....folks always end up wantin more hp in the end........

23 foot would be a major PIA to trailer and launch all the time.

Your going to have to be carefull Long Island is the KING of used-up boats

The number one thing is forget everything you know about cars NOTHING swaps around easy like car motors and trannys

I have to chop-up up the two that were just dumped in are parking lot at work

If you look at the web sights like Islander boat center
Under%205000a.jpg

You will find a ton of boats that NOBODY wants because the cost to get them in good condition will be much more than there value

Yeah, I hear you on the used up boat deal. Everyone and their mother has an old boat in their yard or driveway. I went down to the local storage yard to see what they had laying around and most of it was obvious junk. And it wasnt cheap either. The nicest thing I saw was a 13" boston whaler clone with trailer and 40 hp motor for $1500. But that boat is next to useless to me, its like a rowboat with a motor. I dont understand the fascination with those things. I need to seat 5 people.

Well try and understand that there are tons of people who DONT need to seat 5 people, and are using their boat to fish.....in which case a 3-15" with a 40hp motor is perfect for most inland lakes.
