Ok, a few more launches and retrieve's and were all set! Off we go to Kentucky Lake in Tennessee.

Rented a place on a little bay with it's own dock. At the mouth of the bay was a 72 slip abandoned marina with a great launch for free.

Got there late afternoon so we launched the boat the next morning. Spent a great day out on the lake, even brought two large dogs along.

Now it's time for the first mate's driving lesson:D Went back to the dock, took a break, dropped the dogs, etc. It's early evening so we decided to fish out in the little bay. I took the middle seat to row us out, we fished for awhile not much luck so decided to head for the abandoned marina where stiped bass were supposedly biting. Since the first mate was already in the back she became the captain;) She said give me a quick lesson and off we putted down the bay. We pulled into a slip at the marina and I said ok put it in neutral now. She said it won't shift, I said turn the throttle to idle, she said it won't shift, were getting pretty close to the dock in front of us by now and I said again put it in neutral, she said it won't shift. ALL OF A SUDDEN the throttle went wide open and we hit the dock. Being a jon boat the bow went right on up, the stern went under then the boat tipped over on it's side, threw us out and filled up with water.:) Amazingly no one was hurt. When I gathered my wits:confused: and realized that we both were ok I looked over to see that the motor was underwater:eek:

I'm glad you're both OK.

For what it's worth, I'm also trying to teach my mate to operate the boat, but we're concentrating on maneuvers in open water.... she's real nervous about being close to immoveable objects.
Maybe we'll do cast and retrive exercises.....throw a life jacket overboard and get close enough to be able to pick it up.

She's really good about trying stuff she's never done and learning from what's gone wrong. I try not to yell.;)

I need to teach the mate how to handle the bass bote in an emergency. I ain't looking forward to it. It's hot enough that only one of my 3 teenagers has enough brass to floor it.

Yeah, but unless you want to scare her don't impress her with how fast it is. Impress her with the importance of control, and NOT exceeding one's abilities. If it's an emergency, wrecking the boat, or not knowing what to do, will only compound the emergency. I've already had this talk with my mate.

I know that. I seldom run faster than 40 when she's riding. But..... you have to give it a little to get it on top, which is where you want to be if yer haullin' the ole man (me) doing a cardiac event or something.

I think I'll start with the foot controlled trolling motor.

Actually, it took me some time to get her to quit bobber fishing and throw a bass bait. Now I have a hellova time outfishing her.:D She may surprise me yet.

wow!

I am glad everyone is ok, and sorry about your boat!

I am sooo scared to teach my first mate to operate the boat ... this story doesnt help matters... she isn't even that good with a car ... ugh

I hope you were able to save the motor... most of the time if you follow the procedures in the first few hours after a dunk, you'll be fine with it.

Happierwet - Nice tip on going for a lifejacket or something in open water... i'm definitely going to use that one!

Boy, I'm glad we weren't in your boat. We'd be DEAD.

Re: First Boat,part 2 (1st Crash)

I've taught a lot of children how to run boats. There's a balance between instruction and nagging, and feeding the right amount of information at the right time.

Start with practicing in open water. then go for pick-ups like the life preserver and touch-and-go to a piling (or better a soft bank if you can) and then a dock.

Key is to let them make some mistakes, try again, and not have any people around.

Practice practice practice. If you are new at launching, for example, and can go to an empty ramp and spend an hour luaching and retrieving, it is time well invested.

Also, generally, husbands/boyfriends should not teach wives/girlfriends how to do stuff--golf, skiing or boating-- or he may become a "former" and she a "previous." There's something in the dynamic. I know there are exceptions and that it's not always feasible, but better to have a relative or friend take her out alone than the two of you. Provided, of course, that they come back!

I finally figured out the reason fisherman need a boat that does 70 mph+!! :p
