I've got a friend that's a fantastic artist, and he sells his paintings through his gallery @ FrankGee.com. And, he's an obsessive compulsive fisherman.

When Franks catches an especially great fish, he paints the fish of its original colors and presses the fish on large pieces of rice paper. Then, he touches the paper image up. It's an old Japanese art form. And, it's easier and more artistic to have a Frank Gee fish portrait on the wall.

maybe but that dont pay MY bills lol. thanks for the support. im not even going into the artistic aspect lol.

got the fins backed tonight. a product called silkspan is cut to fit the rear of a fin.
finback1.jpg

then the fin backing cream is brushed on the rear and the silkspan pressed into it. i used a modeling tool to press the silkspan into the contours of the fin rays.
finback2.jpg

this is the first step to repairing the splits in the tail and fins if they are damaged. the split in the tail will be further repaired with epoxy in the next stage.
finback3.jpg

all the fins backed. the fin backing cream soaks into the hard brittle fins and makes them flexible and they will remain flexable. it then dries totally transparent.

finback4.jpg
the next step will be rebuilding some shrunken areas with epoxy before final paint and finish work.

i am self taught. i buy dvds and watch them over and over. total cost to learn bass? $29.00. lol. better than $10,000 schools. they have dvds on everything from moose to snakes.

Nice work, the whitetails look very nice and like caverun ky said, I would give you some business if I were closer and ever get another trophy  I contemplated getting into taxidermy years ago but the smell of some of the chems. gave me headaches just lingering in the shops for 1/2 hr.

Re: first bass mounting

thanks guys. got the fins on the bass all trimmed up tonight. all thats left is epoxy work and i can paint. prob fill some small holes later tonight but the throat isnt fully dry so i cant rebuild the tongue yet or set eyes.

the dry brittle cracked fins are now

transparentfin.jpg

and flexible fin1.jpg

i have to feather the thick tail splits with epoxy to make them look convincing still but other than that fins are ready for paint.

Great looking stuff. Interesting how the process works. Fitting too! I had a 20" bass mounted for my daughter who caught it ice fishing last year. Was done in time for her 16th b-day in July.

If you don't mind, I'd like to share it with you..

Re: first bass mounting

Looks real nice.

Question, my brother wants to mount a chickadee. Yeah, that's what I thought too. lol Is it possible? Or, do they just freeze dry them? He has a deer shoulder mount that he added fall branches as a backdrop. He wants a chickadee perched on a branch.....

Re: first bass mounting

Looks good. I got a couple of general interest questions for you.

1. Why do a skin mount? Most of the local guys recommend going with a fiberglass mount.
2. What is up with all the mounts with the fishes mouth distended? The only time you see a fish in the wild with his mouth all distended like that is when someone is holding it by his lip.

Re: first bass mounting

i did a skin mount because the customer brought me a frozen fish. and skin mounts are cheaper. and bass reproduce.

the customer wants a big ol mouth. and this one isnt distended as alot ive seen. the fluid line should run from tail to lower mandables and this one does pretty good.

if you want a closed mouth ask for it.
this is if you were saying this one was distended. or maybe just courious as many are. depends on the taxidermist. some are better than others and represent a better pose of a real life animal than others. search largemouth bass mounts. my pait job smokes many youll see. why on my first? because i watched a step by step painting dvd
here the way to distened examples. obviously not done by me since this was my first
thCA03SK6E.jpg
to wide.jpg
thCAC5JLC2.jpg
but its what the paying customer wants. if he says paint it purple then its purple. replicas are ok. but if someone is paying good money and wants the actual fish he caught then thats his choice.

this is the fish i did. red is fluid line blue is to overbearing example.
example.jpg
bass in the wild do extend thier mandables to engulf prey. see any fingers?
no fingers.jpg

another note. the foam form i used for this bass was $18. the eyes. were $5ish. a fiberglass repro blank that requires many hrs of sanding seams and attaching fins and buying gills and attaching ect is roughly $150-$170 dollars depending on the sculpter and line you get. meaning this fish would been at least $100 more than the skin mount.

depends. first is it legal to cause the death of a chickadee where he lives. if not then gonna be real hard to find a taxidermist to touch it. if its not then it could be done. finding a taxidermist with the skill would prob be tough. and costly. freeze dried may be a more cost effective choice. or a maybe a woodcarved one.

Re: first bass mounting

He's not going to kill one, he'll wait until one bounces of the house window. I guess he could never prove the window theory. Just wondered if it was doable........

as long as the law allows it. any protected species, like songbirds ect you have to contact a game official to get propper tags for the taxidermist. liscened taxidermists must have tags for everything in the shop. roadkills ect. different states vary. ya ive seen things as small as field mice mounted.
