First 4 stroke, How do I use it?

Maybe I shouldn't ask how I use it because I am aware how to operate it. Just bought another pontoon boat but unlike the ones I have owned in the past, this one has a mercury 4 stroke. With my 2 strokes I either added oil straight to the gas or I used the oil injection system. My question is how does this 4 stroke work? Similar fashion? Sorry for my ignorance. While on the subject are there any additional steps required on a 4 stroke to winterize? Thanks for all the help, I did a few searches and couldn't find exact answers.

The four stroke has its oil in the crank case just like your car, im not familiar with your motor but im guessing there should be a dipstick under the cowl to check the oil.

its a 4 stroke like your car engine. You dont mix gas and oil. Oil goes in the crankcase just like in a car. Gas goes in the gas tank.

+1. Just straight gas in the fuel tank with a separate oil tank. You will need to check and change the oil every season, but otherwise you use the motor the same way you would a car or modern lawnmower.

Just make sure you use muffs and a long hose when cutting the grass. :watermelon: Sorry, but that brought up a strange image. :)

That would be cool. I could cut and water the grass at the same time. I just got done mowing the gass as a matter of fact. LOL

If you post your engine s/n, I will see if I can dig up an owner operator manual for you.

Gerry I will try to get the s/n tomorrow. So is there anything special to winterize this thing? I typically connect the muffs and start. While its running I fog the motor until it dies. I then remove the muffs and remove the spark plu. With the spark plug out I crank the motor a few times to remove any water. I then spray down the plug with wd40 and reinstall. I then give another shot of fogging fluid and spray everything down with wd40. I then drain and fill the lower unit and grease the propeller shaft. One final coat of wd40 on everything and then wrap the whole thing in a tarp. Anything I am not thinking of? Thanks

On my 8HP Honda I also change the crankcase oil.

That sounds about right wn, but every manufacturer tends to have their own procedure. You may also want to drain the gearcase to remove any water that may freeze and expand over the winter, then fill it with some fresh lube. You can probably also find a vid of someone doing the job for your motor on youtube while you wait for your manual.

There is an oil filter that should be changed as well. Just like your car, it needs periodic oil and filter changes. And there is no separate OIL TANK as was mentioned. The oil goes inside the engine crankcase -- again, just like your car. The engine DOES NOT use two-stroke TCW-III oil. It requires whatever oil Mercury recommends for your 4-stroke. Depending on where you live and how long the layup period is, you do not need to fog a 4-stroke (or a two-stroke for that matter). Again, follow the procedure Mercury recommends.

My mercury 90hp 4 stroke has a sticker on the flywheel cover under the cowl that tells me the grade and amount of oil needed in the engine. You should change it every 100 hours, right now if it's new to you and at least before you put it away for the winter. There is a filter on the side of the engine that's pretty big and easy to see. That just screws off.
