Since Mrs Boomyal's IE 6.0 went beserk we have been using FireFox. She's getting PO'd because it takes her from 3-5 tries(clicking on the icon) before it will open.(server cannot be found message) Is this normal? I'm on the same network and have no problem opening IE7.

Nope, should work the first time. Have you tried firefox on your computer to see if the problem follows? I bet it doesn't. Have you tried creating new user on her machine and see if it works?

No and No. Her laptop is a late model Dell with XP. Don't think it acted like this when we first installed it. I have not yet experienced it so I'll give it a try myself and see what's up.

I use firefox and it times out much faster than IE on slow servers and gives the error

could be with your firewall.

I'll try turning it off and see what happens. If that is the problem, is there a workaround?

BTW, you are a busy beaver this morning. Got all three of my posts in one fell swoop!8)

I'm still interested to see what happens as a different user. That'll rule out anything wrong in her profile. You can delete when you're done testing so no worries there. It won't have any effect on her existing profile.

Firefox may take a little longer to launch than IE. This is because IE is part of the OS and thus a good chunk of it is already loaded into memory. It shouldn't be much longer though. If you click the icon and it doesn't come up, look in the process list in the task manager. See if firefox.exe is there.

Oh and always start with the basics. Make sure you're getting an IP address and can ping your default gateway. Then see if you can ping an address on the internet by ip first and then by name. If it pings the ip but not the name, you have a DNS problem.

For example:

ping www.iboats.com

ping 209.63.105.8

That's your basic fuel, fire and compression for network troubleshooting right there. 8)

Re: FireFox logon issues?

Eric, it is the TrendMicro Antivirus subscription firewall.

i386, I will download it onto my computer if turning off the firewall does not do the trick. I'm not sure about how and when I do the pinging business.

When firefox does load, it loads quick enough. It's just that many times you just get the website cannot be found message. Close the message and try it again, once, twice, thrice, etc until if finally opens.

To ping:
Go to Start>run and type cmd, a window will open and you can then type ping iboats.com or the
ip address, ping 209.63.105.8
Please try the new user on her computer to see if the problem follows

Re: FireFox logon issues?

I did as above with the current user. It timed out 4 times.
What's next? Set up another user and try it again?

I did same on my computer and it sent packets, straight away, 4 times.

Re: FireFox logon issues?

Hokay! Here are the results. I signed on as a Guest user and did the ping thing. Same results. I went back to my wifes identity, turned off the TrendMicro firewall and redid the ping thing.

It worked, it sent the packets. All the while though, I kept opening up FireFox and it always opened for me, even before turning off the firewall.

For now, I've left the firewall turned off.

If the firewall proves to be the source of the logon issue, should I call TrendMicro?

So when you logged onto her computer as guest, firefox worked ok? If it did work as guest then there is something wrong with her profile.

ping may be turned off (blocked) by trend, there should a setting for that and I am not familair with that product. sorry.

Actually, FireFox loaded first time for me (many trys) both as Mrs B user and Guest user, with firewall still activated..

What did not happen, repeatedly, was the succesfull pinging, when the TM firewall was turned on. I never got a successful ping while the firewall was on, but FireFox still loaded up anyway?

With the short time I have played with it, I never got the 'cannot find server' message. Over the days, she has said it happens repeatedly. Leaving the firewall off for a few days should paint a picture.

Re: FireFox logon issues?

All ping does is show if you can see other computers in the world. Whereas firefox use a different port and protocol. The firewall can be configured to allow or deny ping, not a issue to worry about if you can still get out to the net with your browser.
Keep us posted Boom.

Re: FireFox logon issues?

Well, the 'can't find server' message still persists. The firewall has remained off. The problem is intermittant in that some times FireFox logs on the first time but mostly requires multiple tries.

I will try the following two things next.

a) sign on as 'Guest' user and copy Mrs B's favorites over to that user so she can surf as usual.

b) if the issue still persists I will download FireFox on my computer, use it and see what happens.
