I hope this is the right place to post this:confused::confused:

My wife just informed me that for one of our summer trips she wants to go somewhere where she can see fireflies. We live in southeast Idaho and I am wondering if anyone could help me with a place I could take her this summer to see them. Preferably a place where I can camp and fish also with a nice town near where we can go carousing. if anyone could help me with this it would be much appreciated. I know it's kind of a weird question but there it is

There are fireflies anyplace east of the Rockies. The first time my wife saw fireflies she was totally fascinated by them. Guess I had taken them for granted. I grew up in Iowa and as kids, we would squeeze their butts off and make "glow in the dark" rings!

o.k. sounds like this won't be too tough. Do I go like mid July when it's hot or is there a good time to up my chances. I can only afford 1 shot at it this year and I don't want her to miss out, she's a good woman and doesn't ask for much so when she does I bend over backwards. Thanks for the help any recommended spot in Kentucky preferrably western side of the state

Not sure if you're serious about this, but I'll bite. You might consider going in early July. Lightning bugs (that's what we Arkies call 'em) will be out in full force and you can catch small town patriotic celebrations as well. However, it's a long and unnecessary haul to Kentucky unless you want to go there any way. You'll find fireflies in Oklahoma, and I'm not positive, but you'll probably find them in Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota as well, all of which are considerably closer to Idaho than the bluegrass state. Just a thought. Happy hunting.;)

I have a friend in arkansas whom I haven't seen in 2-3 years so that's pretty tempting. And I've always wanted to go to the Dakotas. I'm going to Mull this over with the wife and I 'll post our trip plans . Not that anyone will care. but for all your help you at least deserve an awnser right!!
Thanks friends

Re: fireflies destination

We've got a very healthy population of fireflies around here. From June to August they keep the kids busy in the evenings. They get excited every time they see the little things glowing.:)

On a side note I've heard that light pollution is hindering their mating habits. I guess they can only reproduce if it's sufficiently dark to see the lights.
