It's fortunate that fireman will have a second chance. Looks like somebody didn't take the fuel tank into account. Sheesh!

I wonder how long the fuel had been in the boat prior to the fireman igniting it?

It was a training exercise that just had more fumes available than anticipated and I was surprised the sides held up.

A bit more realistic than they bargained for.

Good that the rescue boat was near. The firefighter wouldn't have stayed afloat long with full gear and SCBA on. We burned a boat last year. Only we used diesel fuel. Little harder to ignite but then you don't get those BIG surprises.

Wow! I tried to track him as the explosion occured. I couldn't. Next thing I know he is flopping out of the boat, over the gunwale. Couldn't tell if he still had his mask on.

That is why caution needs to be used whether it is training or the real thing. Last year we lost a fine firefighter and instructor when he went in to a training facility to light off a "controlled burn" for his students to train in. Protocol was not followed - he was extremely experienced but went in alone and never came out - apparently got too hot for his gear.

Volunteer or career, fires are still fires and are dangerous. Anything can and usually does happen.

Here is a real life fire - no one was injured, but the FF's ruined a couple hoses and melted their turnout gear. IMO it was a stupid stunt - couldn't save the mobile home or contents so the needed to concentrate on the surrounding buildings instead of gaining access. They knew no one was inside.
