Re: fire in the hole

wow, just wow... Do people realize what starting fluid does to engines? Its horrendously bad on 2 strokes, but even damaging to 4 strokes. Obviously this guy doesn't, after spraying half a can in and around the engine. (not sure why he did that, he was waving that thing all around the engine bay, like spraying the OUTSIDE of the engine helps.)

This guy is just asking for a Darwin award. Sprayed enough in there to fire a 747.

Re: fire in the hole

I once saw a diesel truck engine blow up from too much starter fluid being used. WOW what a mess of parts all over the shops 12 bays and even threw some of the truck entry doors. All I did was duck and cover, thought someone had dropped a grenade in there. Guess what the shop forman said first thing off???????????????

Look down further.......................

HEADS UP!!

Sounds stupid BUT there were some ceiling fans that got hit and they were about to start thowing their blades around next :( Needless to say that guy had a lot of talking to do for all the damages to the shop and other trucks around.

PS he did end up staying there to work a little longer  if only to pay for the dammages!

LOL, I won't use this stuff, EVER. But my dad has used it for years on his old cars and somehow has avoided major explosions somehow... However a good friend of mine was in a hurry years ago and tried starting his all of a sudden hard to start oldsmobile, so he could get it ready to ship out where he was being stationed in the army.....he added way too much and the engine blew off several "important" pieces, and never ran again.....

Oh I love the comment "could just be some junk in the injectors"

For the reckless braniacs of the world, ether does not clean injectors, this guy was just to cheap to fix the actual problem.

This is the equivalent of having something stuck in your teeth and then using C4 plastic explosive ro remove it.

We should start getting a mughsot photo of these people and start posting them on the website.

Ether has it's uses, but in small quantities......if you are not sure how much to use, then dont use it.

Totally agree Sixmark, I have to use it on my snowcat when its -25 degrees and I think I use 1/100th of what that guy used. That's about the only time I can see a use for it except in an emergency. This guy should be a Darwin Awards contestant. something wrong with the injectors! what a dumba**.

The only engine I ever had to use that much ether on was an old v8 Cummings diesel at below zero temps. It was so cold blooded that the exhaust was mostly fuel vapor for about 20 minutes after startup.

Once it gotagoing, it was a screamer as long as you drove it like you stole it.

Re: fire in the hole

It's hard to fix stupid. One of the craziest I saw was back in the 70's. A bass boat had the fuel tank in the front with a rubber line along the gunwale to the engine. Along that same route was unfuzed wiring for the trolling motor. Trolling motor shorted out. Fuel line burned through. Boat floor quickly covered in flaming gas. Two fishermen dive overboard. Boat burns down to the water line and sinks.

I personally think this was mother natures failed attempt at natural selection.

She realized this guy shouldn't reproduce and figured and figured at the very least it would cook his reproductive organs.

Maybe for an encore performance this guy will try cleaning his prop with a tootbrush and the motor running!!!!

The rule I was taught about starting fluid.

If you have to use starting fluid, something is broke. Follow these steps.
1] set the can of starting fluid down.
2] fix the real problem.
3] see step # 1 if in doubt.

Re: fire in the hole

i've used it a couple times on carb'd gas engines never on FI.
on diesels we used to put gasoline on a rag and stick in the intake. careful not to let the rag get sucked into the intake.

That guy was a "Marine Mechanic" that was hired off of Craigslist. The boat owner/cameraman is a member of another forum I'm on. Beware of CL!!!!

He aint to good a mechanic as you never use ether to start a engine, I use fuel in a spray bottle. If he knew what he was doing and listened to the customer he would have known fuel pump was not running and engine was (a) low on oil (b) oil pressure switch bad (c) fuse or relay was defective

Re: fire in the hole

I have to contradict what some of you are saying: ether is not a bad thing. It is great for cleaning dirty parts of almost anything. :D Even your hands on occasion, just stay away from flames. ;)

As far as starting vehicles, the only one I've ever used it on is an old tractor (I'm talking 50's). It just needs a puff, and I mean a small puff, to start. Nothing anywhere close to what that guy used.

Re: fire in the hole

when I was young & dumb I sprayed and ignited the carb on a 1973 p/u trk---went to dump an ice chest of water on it-cept the ice chest was full of leaves instead of water.
