Has anyone here ever heard of using fingernail pollish as a thread sealer? I heard this from a local merc repairman.

Yeah and the merc manuals say to use nylon stockings over the airbox...... although the base of my airbox could use a "cotton panel"to absorb the residual oil......... and I have "Masingailed" a carburator or two........ Sorry, I could not resist.. :p

I've never used it to seal threads but I use it to seal the welch plugs on carburetors to prevent possible leaks.

I use it on the little screws in my eyeglasses.

I use it to paint a stripe around my tools for easy ID. I use White-out to highlight timing marks and on linkage screws to detect tampering.

If your tech can not afford to buy loctite the what else is he skimping on. When I was a kid my dad treated every illness with castor oil. I think that we have evolved since then. Use loctite on threads and gasola on welch plugs. Don't skimp on something so expensive. These engineers now a days are pretty sharp. I don't think they would reccomend fingernail polish to hold a $300.00 stator in place. I can't imagine why anyone would.

When we were kids, my brother and I used to use nail polish and toilet paper to repair rips in speaker cones. I still use wood glue to seal threads, but not on my boat motor. Offshore is no place to say to yourself,"Why oh why did I not get some Loctite???????".

Re: Fingernail Pollish???

hello
use fingernail polish to mark timing points and as an anti-tamper fluid. dont use it as a loctite. its far to brittle and is affected by oil as well as some bug sprays :) :) . use the right stuff for the task at hand and life is easy :) :)
good luck and keep posting
