Finding information on my mysterious Evinrude 4hp...

Hello,

Just bought a boat with an Evinrude 4hp motor.
As displayed on sticker:
Mod. No. CE4BRCCS
SER. No. C 7227519

I have a few issues with it, but while searching the web, can't find anything relating to it. Google search with the model number only results in one link of a post on this forum but dating back to 2006...!!

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks!

Issues I'm having:
how do you take the cover off ?? (integrated gas tank, not obvious how to take the cover off...??)
No water shooting from motor while running (reason I need to take the cover off...!!)

Thank you very much for that help. Very useful !
Only "serious" issue I can find is there is no water flow whatsoever, but then again, I have no idea where the water flow would be ?? Can't take the top cover off (gasoline tank) and looked around underneath and can't see any "hose" or otherwise a hole where the water would come out ??

I think you will find your 4Hp does not have a telltale so as racerone says the only indication you have that it is pumping water is a mist or a few droplets blown out of the exhaust back pressure relief port on the back of the leg

I'm not sure what type of case your motor has but if it is the type below then the fixing screws are accessible from underneath.
( don't unscrew the screw in the top of the cover or the recoil starter will fall apart and the spring will escape)

Thanks for the information. Yes, that looks like my motor (see pictures). And yes, there are 8 holes on the back of the leg that were certainly spitting out water and smoke, so I imagine that is where the water from the cooling system is spewed out ??

Also, might start another thread, but wondering how to access the carburetor since it seemed to be puttering along and stalling occasionally, so might need a carb cleaning. Undid the front and back flathead screws and the bottom with plastic cover would have come off if it wasn't for those two front controls that keep it from coming off. Was hesitating to just pull them off...?? Don't want to break anything...!

Only some of the cooling water spits out of those holes.-----Install a new impeller now.

make certain the top vent is open while running and make certain the air holes are not crudded shut . before you tear into it (carb) try some evinrude engine cleaner in the fuel run it awhile it may clear up.

some use/like seafoam some don't like it.

3- 4- 5 hp etc... all have the same basic structure
if you plan to service small engines you need to get yourself manuals or seach utubes for your engine... make certain impeller blades will turn clockwise looking down at it when installed

This was the beginning of the end for omc....they ended up putting more screws on the cowling, (subbed out to Suzuki) making it ridiculously time consuming to get to anything underneath it.

You have a good little 4 horse though so learning how to work on the little beast is a great project.

Good for you.

the more modern engines evolved from oldies with their simpler designs .Modern capacitance discharge ignitions are simpler in design (less or no mechanical parts) but the mechanics have not drastically changed.

to read up on oldies a cheap book to "learn" from is the Johnson service manual and for 20$ you get a lot of info on the mechanics and operating concepts ...carbs, shifting, gear case powerheads ignition ! etc...

doesn't cost much more than a couple of today's fancy read and throw away magazines...!

600+ pages you can download and print locally or store on your PC . it may not cover your 4hp but the 3hp version JW's have much similar

Some of the above information is misleading
A 1988 model is rather different to the older models referred to and illustrated.
It does not have a reverse gear but it does have a clutch so there is a shift rod which will pull out of the gear case as this is separated from the "leg".
The water pump is similar but notice the different type of impeller drive key (Take care to retrieve this as the impeller is removed and refit when fitting the new impeller.)

The diagram below taken from the parts list is I think relevant to the 1988 model
( the water tube is not shown but will pull from the pump as the gearcase is removed )

When reassembling make sure the O ring #39 is in position in the groove at the top of the drive shaft. Lightly grease the splines ( but don't put grease on the end of the shaft)

While the gearcase is off and the water pump removed would be a good time to replace the driveshaft seals (#11) and the shift rod seal (O ring #8)

Wow... thank you so much guys - so much information!! Will definitely get working on that little old and simple 4hp and will be careful not to loose the pin !!

Silly question..., everyone is telling me to "change the impeller"... just wondering, other than preventative maintenance..., is there a reason why I must assume the impeller is bad ? (since there is water coming out of those 8 holes in the leg). Just a question...
