Finally did it! - Converted from oil heat to Natural Gas

This is kind of a continuation of a thread I started a long time ago http://forums.iboats.com/non-boating-technical-topics/oil-natural-gas-heating-conversion-ballpark-cost-532628.html about converting from oil to gas.

After persistent, sometimes subtle, and well-timed logic and persuasion ;), I got my wife to go ahead and agree to the conversion. :joyous: (She had seen too many sensational news stories about gas explosions.) Luckily, there was already a gas main on our street, and it didn't cost anything to have National Grid provide and install the line up to the house since it was under 100' in length. (Over that, they charge $33/ft.)

We put in a Buderus high efficiency cast iron boiler, coupled with a Triangle Tube indirect hot water heater. Since Nat. Grid is currently running a double rebate program for upstate NY for converting to high efficiency gas equipment, we are eligible for rebates of $1,120.

And, there was a report on the local news a couple nights ago that the cost of gas is likely to be 9% less than last year, due to a combination of milder weather predicted, and lower delivery charges. So I'm looking forward to saving a bundle in heating/hot water costs compared to oil. It was a killer every time I had to fill up the oil tank! Everyone I've talked to has said that they've saved about 50% over their cost to heat with oil.

I also feel way more comfortable having a plentiful domestic fuel source rather than depending on the Middle East, and who knows what oil prices will do? That was my main motivator, so I feel we made a good choice all around.

Anyone considering this should check with their utility company for rebate availability. In the upstate NY region, the program runs thru the end of the year, and they have had them almost every year recently.

And on the coldest day of the year. you won't have worry about the tanker starting at the distributors so you can get a delivery. :)

I don't know of anyone, even before rebate programs, that isn't glad they switched over. And up in your neck of the woods, NG is a local product. So you are supporting the local economy as you save a bundle. :thumb:

LakeLover, you already know that you did the right thing. After a year of use, you'll be trying to convince your friends to do it too.

I'm in a suburb of Milwaukee - and it gets COLD[/B][/I] around here. I changed last November, regaining about 18 square feet of my basement where the tank had been. I figured, going in, that it would take me about four to four and a half years to pay back my investment. ($4200 for the changeover and tank removal, line installation, etc.)

After one winter I can see that it will be somewhere around 3 1/2 years for it to pay for itself. And I have a new furnace in the bargain.

Good move, bud.

Yup, my calculation was that the payback time would be about 4 years, so if it's less, all the better. I already like how quiet it is, and the temp. of our domestic HW remains way more constant than when we were taking it off a tankless coil. Once I get the old oil tank out of there, I'll have a nice little storage are too. My end cost should be about $5400, and worth every cent because the contractor I ended up choosing bent over backward to be helpful with options, stuck to their schedule, and did an outstanding installation job. Honest folks.

I am jealous...... not available here :(

Do you have the outdoor thermostat monitoring system for the heater? It does automatic adjustments when the outdoor temp is 40 degrees vs 0 degrees ......so the heater only heats as needed.

Too bad, I wish more people had access, but I guess it's not feasible outside urban centers.

No, I didn't go for that option. I went with the 85% efficient cast iron boiler rather than the super-high 96%+ types because I'm not convinced of the longevity of the heat exchangers in those condensing boilers yet. I believe their life expectancy is a fair amount less than the traditional design cast iron, and their cost is a lot higher.

Re: Finally did it! - Converted from oil heat to Natural Gas

I live in the Los Angeles area and believe it or not, I can't get natural gas. I live around 3/4 of a mile from the nearest NG main and its not worth it for the gas company to extend it out to the small pocket of homes where I am(400 homes or so). I am on propane and believe I would prefer that over oil if I had a choice. Fortuantely, my gas usage is probably miniscule compared to one being in a cold climate so the price delta between NG and LPG is not a back breaker.

For my vacation home in the mountains with NG, I weighed a 80% furnace to a 95% furnace. The HVAC guy talked me out of the high efficiency one because the replacement parts will wipe out any savings I may get. He says the gas valves in these that run $450 are not reliable.

That's just the conclusion I came to. In my research, I saw several cases of having to replace the main control board at a cost of several hundreds. Also, many heat exchangers are made of aluminum and corrode out, esp. with the ultra-high efficiency models that are at lower temps. much of the time.

Update: Over the 2013-14 winter heating season, we saved 52% on our heat/hot water bill. I'm a happy camper.

I have natural gas and the thing I love most about it is a gas stove and NG standby generator.
