This is kind of a continuation of a thread I started a long time ago http://forums.iboats.com/non-boating-technical-topics/oil-natural-gas-heating-conversion-ballpark-cost-532628.html about converting from oil to gas.
After persistent, sometimes subtle, and well-timed logic and persuasion , I got my wife to go ahead and agree to the conversion. :joyous: (She had seen too many sensational news stories about gas explosions.) Luckily, there was already a gas main on our street, and it didn't cost anything to have National Grid provide and install the line up to the house since it was under 100' in length. (Over that, they charge $33/ft.)
We put in a Buderus high efficiency cast iron boiler, coupled with a Triangle Tube indirect hot water heater. Since Nat. Grid is currently running a double rebate program for upstate NY for converting to high efficiency gas equipment, we are eligible for rebates of $1,120.
And, there was a report on the local news a couple nights ago that the cost of gas is likely to be 9% less than last year, due to a combination of milder weather predicted, and lower delivery charges. So I'm looking forward to saving a bundle in heating/hot water costs compared to oil. It was a killer every time I had to fill up the oil tank! Everyone I've talked to has said that they've saved about 50% over their cost to heat with oil.
I also feel way more comfortable having a plentiful domestic fuel source rather than depending on the Middle East, and who knows what oil prices will do? That was my main motivator, so I feel we made a good choice all around.
Anyone considering this should check with their utility company for rebate availability. In the upstate NY region, the program runs thru the end of the year, and they have had them almost every year recently.
