Ok, I finally got my transom beefed up and that thing is solid now. Put 3/4" plywood, filled behind it with thickened epoxy to componsate for the curve in the transom, and then epoxied it into the corners. Came out good. As far as the bracket I have, every dealer I showed it to said it should handle 80 pounds with no problem, if I strap the motor to a cleat on the boat to keep it from bouncing. Now all I have to do is buy the motor! I am really leaning toward a 4 stroke now after reading the posts and the dealers I talked to due to the fact that it will be at idle most of the time for trolling. (That will idle slow enough to barely push the 2000 pound boat right?) So once again, the Nissan 9.8 is about $1600 shipped. At the local dealers, that would come to close to $2000 after tax. Seems like the best deal here, just kinda makes me wonder why not too many people have them. Could even get the electric start one for $1800 shipped (don't really need that though). The Yamaha and Johnson 4 stroke 8HP are also about $2000 locally after tax, with a Honda slightly more. Possibly could get the Yamaha or Johnson 8 for $1850 total after shipping from a place on the web. Then there are still the 2 strokes in those models are around $1600 total. I don't mind spending a couple hundred dollars more if I am really getting something better, but if I am not with those others, I am losing a couple of HP besides. Ok well, I know you have given me opinions before, but now I am actually ready to buy one this week so I thought I'd post one last time. Thanks again for all your help guys.

When you troll with a "kicker", most of the time you will be running it 1/4 to 1/2 throttle just to move your boat slowly. You also have to re-prop the engine with a smaller pitch, usually a "sailboat" prop or you may be "lugging" the motor.

If you choose a 4-stroke, check the weight of it. Some brackets are not recommended for 4-strokes, but there are heavy duty ones available.

Right, the bracket I have is rated at 15 HP 2 stroke, has the hydraulic lift in it. All the dealers I showed it to said it should handle 80 pounds with no problem.

Dan,

Nothing wrong with the Nissan/Tohatsu engines. It's just that dealer support is kind of spotty, in some areas.

That doesn't sound like a problem for you.

Personally, I like to buy local. If I have a problem, I have a face to talk to. That is worth a great deal, to me.

You can't blame a guy (dealer) for putting you on the back burner (come service time) when you bought the same engine from a mail order house.

Let us know what you decide.

Yeah I wondered about support, just in the fact that in catalogs and stores I see parts for everything except Tohatsu. As far as dealer support, I have seen that mentioned on here, but my idea on that is, if my engine is broken, its not like the dealer is going to fix it for any cheaper if I bought it from him, right? He's not going to know where I bought it. I don't take my boat back to where I bought it from to get fixed, or my car, or anything for that matter. I bought a brand new truck a few years ago, had problems right away. The dealer did me no special favors besides make me have to bring it back because he didn't fix it the first time, tried to charge me for a loaner car, and got grease all over my seat besides! I don't mean to come across as sarcastic, I am just wondering if I am missing something here. I could see if this was in a small town or something, but in a bigger city I am sure they get a lot of motors in there, as there are many dealers as well. If dealer support is that big of a deal, I would probably by the Yamaha locally because that guy was really helpful. Then again I would be losing about 2 HP (don't know if that is a great deal in this instance, I see both have the same displacement and was reading that post on that issue). Please fill me in if I am missing something, thanks again.
