Filter Head / Filter Compatibility

Are most / all fuel filter heads and filters compatible as long as the diameter matches? I have a nice stainless steel filter head, courtesy of my boat's previous owner, but it has a simple cartridge filter made by Sierra and I would like to replace it with one that has a clear bowl.

Thanks. Also, if someone has a link to a cross-reference, that would be great.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I am guessing I have the Mercury-style filter, as it looks just like the one in the article (4 ports) but in stainless. I will take off the canister to measure the hole to make sure. I appreciate the help!

In NY, the clear-bowl filters are not to be used with gasoline -- just for diesel. I believe the Tohatsu/Nissan 10-micron water-separating cartridge (all metal) will work on your bracket. I replaced my cheap Sierra with the Tohatsu/Nissan unit, and it fit perfectly.

Racor makes one that will work just fine.

The Racor version with the clear settling bowl is not rated for gas if in an enclosed area. So if -- and only if -- the filter is out in the open, the Racor replacement is top notch. Unless you have a ton of water intrusion in your fuel, a one-piece metal filter should do you for a full season -- and is a lot cheaper. If the filter is mounted in a locker, the cheaper metal cartridges are the only legal choice.

You can not mount a clear bottom Racor in an enclosed area that houses a source of combustion. (i.e. I/O or an inboard). In this case you would want to use a Racor with the metal drain bowl.

You can legally mount a clear bottom Racor anywhere you wish with an outboard.

Don't know where the original poster is located, but in NY, clear bowls are not OK in enclosed spaces, period.

We're not even allowed to use clear or plastic in-line filters, and must use type A1 fuel hose, not the cheaper B2, etc., if it runs in an enclosed area.

It's quite unusual for State regulations to supercede USCG regulations. Do you have a link to the NY regulations?
