Check out this picture and let me know how you would fill these pockets before I paint the gimble housing, gimble ring,,, outdrive, etc...

gimble_paint.jpg

Everything was painted with Rustoleum 4-5 years ago following the procedure from mercstuff.com. One thing I didn't do was to fill the corrosion pockets, just treated, primed and painted, leaving the indents/pockets seen in the picture. I want to get rid of the pockets and make it look smooth again.

I was thinking of scuffing the paint in the pockets and filling with epoxy, sound right? Would I need to go all the way to bare metal?

Product is called All Metal.
Good filler for a sterndrive case.
Follow the directions on the can.

Can you use it on out drives also ?

You skim coat the whole thing before painting it ?

Any paint will stick after it dries ?

I also was looking for a way also to get rid of pot marks.

I have used JB weld for that same thing before.Sand to bare metal and skim coat it. Sand and primer....It worked fine.
Never tried all metal..maybe thats a better route.

I'm fresh water only but it has help up great. After sanding and Zinc Chromate primer over it you could never tell any pits were there.
Nice thing about the JB is you can put it on extra thick and go over it with 80 grit before it fully hardens.Get the correct shape you need then let it harden another day and sand smooth.
Its been on there over a year now with no problems...:)

JB weld, I love that stuff. (Don't know why that didn't cross my mind?)

Doesn't look like it would take too long to clean the pits with a die grinder/dremel and fill.

Thanks again!
