Ficht or flight?

Here we go again! I actually posted this to an earlier question but then realised that it might not be seen. Sorry! The other day my Evinrude Ficht 225 crapped out on me. The mechanic said that the emm was shot though no codes were thrown. He determined this by some voltage checks. Since we had a soft grounding in mud the day before he speculated that the pump ingested some mud and it plugged up the cooling circuit of the emm and caused it to fail. Since I noticed a diminished pee stream I saw the logic in this. However in some previous posts on this forum I noticed that extended periods of trolling can also affect the emm. The day of the breakdown we had been operating at about 1500-2000 rpm for about an hour. The horn went off, check engine light came on and then came SeaTow. Any thoughts on this?

The EMM is used on 2000 and later models of FICHT outboards and it is water cooled. If your engine did suck up some mud, it could definitely affected the cooling water passage to the EMM and fuel vapor cannister. That is probably why you got a CHECK ENGINE alarm and not an OVERHEAT alarm. Getting an EMM too hot will damage internal components, or at least stress and weaken them. The most common problem after an overheated EMM is the lack of ignition, sometimes with no codes at all.

The factory and a company called DFI each have an EMM and ECU rebuilding program.

Re: Ficht or flight?

Thanks for your quick responses! This is one great forum thanks to guys. The engine is a 2000 model E225FPXSS. If the motor did ingest mud what do I do in regards to flushing? Also does $900 (rebuilt) $1300 (new) sound right for the emm or is this another case where the sum of the parts greatly exceeds the whole?
