What's the difference between long and short hair matting? What are the uses of each. Could I use short hair matting for decking replacement? Which kind should be used for hull patches?
Thanks.

Re: Fiberglass Matting

Not sure about long hair/short hair matting.. The only products that I've heard that refer to Hair length are filler putties like Kitty Hair and Bondo Glass ect.. The other times you might hear of strand length is when you are using a chopper gun in which you can vary the lengths of glass fibers that the machine cuts...

The only types of fiberglass matting I know of that are used in boatbuilding and repair are 3/4 oz. chop strand mat, 1 and a 1/2 oz. chop strand mat, and surface veiling which is a finishing layer not for structural repair.. The oz. refers to the weight of the product in ounces per squarre foot and has nothing to do with the actual lenght of the strands...

I find 1 1/2 oz. to be the general use mat for anything I do.. You can tear it into small pieces to repair small areas and it works well in curved areas and sharp bends...

If you need to make repairs to the outer skin of a hull "patches" then I would use 1 1/2 oz mat and some extra cloth to give the area extra strength...

Re: Fiberglass Matting

I'm aware of mat for polyester in the following weights: 3/4, 1-1/2, 2 & 3 oz. 3/4 surfacing and 1-1/2 filler are the most common. Longer strands make it harder to work around corners and curves. Mat is measured by sq ft & cloth by the sq yd.
