Pulled boat out of water, sitting in prep area unloading boat etc. Get everything unloaded, all tied down and about ready to depart. Bottle of Coke in one hand and towel in the other, I'm barefoot and ready to walk down the swim step. We have a new Cobalt with the extended fold out swim step. I think to myself "I bet that swim step is slippery as hell" as I'm stepping onto it and sure enough I actually barefoot ski right down all 3 levels of swim step and straight down to the ground! No idea how I didn't fall or what star was shining on me to assist me in landing on my feet on the ground. I did smack my ankle bone on each level on the way down (damn think hurts like hell!!) but other than bruised ego and swollen ankle, no harm done. Never dropped the Coke or towel either!

Now I'm searching for opinions on swim step padding - kinda partial to the faux teak that I have seen on several boats.

I'm glad you didn't get severly hurt. On the other hand, if your talking about a teloscoping ladder, they are not suppose to be use when your boat is out of the water. They are not made to take the stress out of the water. If you keep using it out of the water, it will break eventually.

If nobody saw you, it didn't happen. Besides, not dropping the Coke or towel only proves your immense athletic prowess. You did point that out to your wife didn't you ???

You didn't fall - you dismounted with bravado.

Have to agree with everyone else. Score points for not dropping the towel or spilling the coke. I too like the faux teak from seadek and that is what I would go with. It is what we are putting on our platform and when the carpet wears out, it will go inside as well.

Re: Fell off the d@mn boat

i did something similar a few weeks ago but did not come out as well as you did.

We had just got back from the lake and i was unloading stuff out of the boat in preparation for washing it all down (salt water run). I had the knee board in my hand and stepped over the gunwall onto the trailer step. placed the kneeboard on the ground kind of like a support, and stepped off the trailer. My driveway is fairly steep and i guess i stepped wrong but i rolled my ankle. trying to catch myself i put the other knee down, and both hands out, leaving the kneeboard to fend for itself.

Final result was 2 scuffed palms, a sore wrist, a 2x2 chunk of missing knee skin, a cut toe, and a scuffed side of my foot (where the ankle rolled) I also now have a knot on the side of my foot that hasnt went away, and the ankle still hurts if i sit on it wrong.

The new boat is even harder to get in and out of. :(

Re: Fell off the d@mn boat

I had an Olympic moment after backing the boat (2007 FW H180) into the garage Friday. Was cleaning up some stuff in the cockpit area and decided to dismount over the bow. Was sitting there trying to put right foot down on the folded tongue and missed it by an inch or so (may have as well been a foot) and so I start toppling over forward with left leg and arm catching inside the bow enough to stop me at about 90 degrees. Have a huge purple bruise on my left bicep. Seems I get some new bruises and scratches with every outing. Must be getting older cause the catlike reflexes just aren't what they used to be.

Re: Fell off the d@mn boat

A couple of summers ago we had just docked and tied off. My son wasn't cooperating or something and I was all mad and jumped onto the swim platform to then step onto the dock. Well stepped onto the platform and before I knew it my feet were above my head and I was in the water. I still to this day don't know how I didn't hit my head on the boat. Didn't even get a scratch, just a bruised ego from everyone laughing at me.

Re: Fell off the d@mn boat

i did something similar

Me too, couple of years ago though. I was climbing out of the parked boat when a loop in my shoe lace knot caught on a rod holder. Instead of my foot swinging out, down, and onto the ground, it was hung on the rod holder. Gravity (per HC) took a hold and I went sailing towards the driveway with my foot pinned to the gunnel. I threw my hands out and caught my self inches from face-planting into the concrete, the shoe lace breaking about 1/2 way down. Hopped up, brushed off my hands, looked around to see if anyone saw my fine gymnastic maneuver, then continued on as nothing happened. My palms were scuffed a bit, but no damage otherwise, well,,, besides some rattled nerves.

From then on, the rod holders are never installed on the boat while it's on the trailer.....

Re: Fell off the d@mn boat

Boat was trailered after a day at the lake and I was cleaning the inside. Once finished I did the one handed push off dismount from the bow. My wedding ring somehow got caught on a cleat on the way over - thought my finger was going to get pulled right off! Strained it pretty good and got a nasty gash, ring was so twisted I could barely get it off. And still my wife won't buy the excuse that I don't like to wear it because it's hazardous!
