Hello all!

The family and I are making a trip up norht this summer (Wisconsin and Michigan + upper peninsula). I hope to do alot of fishing while out on the trip.

I was wondering what every one's favortie (most productive) pike spoons are. Also if anyone knows any good spots up that way I'd love to have the opportunity to exploit them.

Thanks,
Lowell

I have fished for "snakes" a lot, Lowell. Spoons are my favorite lure.

When fishing in shallows I prefer classic Daredevls in red/white or firetiger. In heavy weeds a Johnson Silver Minnow trailing a bright curlytail.

If I need to go deep for them I use Krokodiles in silver or firetiger.

You can't go wrong with Williams wobblers in both silver& gold.

If you get some, get a couple of different sizes. Sometime they want the smaller lure, sometimes they want the bigger lure.

Spinner baits more commonly used for Bass. Neon green and brown/yellow/orange work best for me (caught a 40" northern on the brown/yellow/orange last year). These will go right through the weeds were they like to hide. Once the water temperature is up I like using spoons in deeper water out past the weedlines (Mid july through september)

I won't be able to take the boat with me on this trip. I'll have the canoe though.

Will I be waisting my time trying to fish pike from the shore where possible? I've never fished for pike before as there arn;t many of them in southern Ohio, they do look like great fun though.

I plan on taking my flyrod and casting some mega divers (bunny strips) for them also.

Any other pointers for these toothy critters?

Thanks again!

I second the spinnerbait, they'll hit anything flashy. Spend six bucks and get the Titanium spinnerbait, cheapo spinner will get destroy by pike.

These work well in NY, too, and some of my favorites. Both for Northerns and smaller cousin pickerel. Depending on weed growth in the summer, sometimes go with Daredevil imitations, that are made from thinner metal, or add a thin slice of a white grub. Makes it easier to keep them near the top.

Depends on what time of year you are going to be up. The bigger fish move out to deep water when the water temperature is high (warm water = lack of oxygen for big fish). You can catch smaller ones right from shore though (biggest I've caught from shore was a 6lb fish). With a canoe I would hook on a live sucker minnow and a huge bobber and paddle out to the edge of the weed line.

Thanks all!

We'll be up there from the end of June to the middle of July. Is the water really heating up at those higher latitudes at this time of year or is it just starting to get warm?

Thanks!

I can't seem to find a "firetiger" color. Could someone link me to a picture so I can see what you're talking about.

Thanks,

What JB said.

As for spoons, the classic Eppingers have seen no rival.

What area of 'Northern' Wisconsin are you going to be in?

Re: Favorite pike spoon colors.

Barlow,

We're going to be in southern WI around Lake Geneva for about a week (my wife's taking a class at the resort). After that we're headed north. We really haven;t decided where we're going to go yet. We'll head up through WI to the upper peninsula of MI the east and back down through MI and eventually back to Ohio.

DO you know of any good spots in WI?

Thanks,
Lowell

Well, lets see here. I just read up and noticed you'll be using a canoe and want to try fly rodding too .. makes things a little more difficult to recommend. Especially June/July.

Generally, this state is littered with Northerns but, targeting them on specific waters in the southern half of the state is a real chore that time of year. Just so you know I want you to understand that. I seriously consider targeting something else until you get North of HWY 29. They're vagadonds that time of year - more so than Muskys.

Once you get North of 29 the waters I know well become a bit more predictable but, getting to areas I'd take you to would be considered part of an 'Iron Man' event when a canoe is involved.

The original floating Rapala 13-G is my goto lure for pike. I've got a whole bunch of them that were chewed to pieces. Lots of good lakes around Seney and Stueben. When you're driving on US-2, check out Kitchitikipi just for fun. (They won't let you fish there but the river is pretty cool.)

The red and white dare devil is an old and very reliable lure. If you want to back up you fishing bet, sling a golden roach or a sucker down off of a big red and white bobber along the weeds. It ain't elegant but fairly effective. Truth be known probably half the northern are caught by pan fishermen.

If you have no particular destination up "north", you might as well go all the way up north and see the length of a beautiful state, with no toll roads. Check out Eagle River or Minocqua. Vacations in Wisconsin don't get much better than that.

Red and white daredevils are good.
Also, the Len Thompson "5 of diamonds" in Yellow and red has been a producer for years.

I will ocassionally toss a hammered copper or hammered brass spoon also.
Thats it.

Buck tail spinners are good, Yellow w/gold spinner, or black w/gold spinner.

Husky jerk Rapalas in black/silver, black/gold, or firetiger.
Rattlin Rapalas in the same colors.
