Holiday?????
We don't have family holidays.
The business dosn't allow it, so I will take a week off and go see my brothers in NZ.
Next yr Anita goes there to see her family.
It is quite good actually, as we are together ALL the time, 24/7, so when one goes away it is good for both of us.......sort of miss the other and it is good when they come back.
Bit strange I know, but it takes a lot to live and work together.

I would like to make a trip to your country one day....want to see the Wall and visit the Smithsonian Institute...(Portrait Gallery..Art...Sculpture...Air & Space and maybe Yankee History).

Cheers
Phillip

Re: favorite holidays

We have 2 favorites and they are both favorites for entirely different reasons.
My wife and I go to the Dominican Republic twice a year for a get away from it all vacation. Sun, beach, fine food, drink and generally being pampered.
The other is our family vacation to Ahmic Lake and cottaging for a week or two. Usually a big group of us. We have 5 children (19 to 26) who bring their significant others or a friend with them. My parents are coming this year from England to join us. Dad is 85 and Mom 82. I know my Dad will want to be tubing on the boat as well !!!!

Re: favorite holidays

Not all English speaking countries speak the same language. :)

In USA the term, "Holiday" refers to a specific date designated to remember/celebrate and event or person.

What other English speaking countries call a Holiday is what we call a vacation.

My favorite Holiday is Independence Day because it celebrates the greatest experiment in human freedom and liberty since the Greek republic.

My second favorite is Memorial Day because it remembers and honors the men and women who gave their lives in defense and preservation of the freedom and liberty we enjoy.

My third favorite is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day because Dr. King led us all out of a dark age and freed us of the terrible burden of segregation.

Goodness JB.
I have always heard you people speak of Holidays and Vacations, but never distinguised the 2.
So in that case ANZAC Day (25th April ...which was 2 days ago) is my favourite, and we all attend.

I flounder around the night before trying to find my medals (then Anita has a womans look), then it is a matter of finding a pair of slacks that still fit, (Anita presses them), then give the good shoes their annual polish (which I have to do).....every year....same routine.

I march with the Vets from my era, Hayden marches with his school, Anita is in the croud. We meet at the service, then me and 3 mates spend a day in the club. Anita arrives in the evening, pours me in to the car, gets Hungry Jacks (Burger King), and I am tucked up in bed snoring by 7.30.

Well, I am sorely disappointed in Americans.

Nothing about the meaning of the day, only about fireworks and turkey. . . "what's in it for me". Are we really that spoiled and ungrateful?

Kiwis remember what their day is about and honor their heroes.

Re: favorite holidays

I do like ID4 and Memorial day for the reasons JB listed. My favorite "Holiday" is Halloween I think because late Oct. is my favorite time of year. No matter where I am in the country it just feels especially good to be outside. Plus Halloween has practically no commercialization which I hate about so many other holidays.

Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Loyalty Day (celebrated in VT) are good holidays but tend to be a time for quiet, rememberance and thinking about how serious those days are. I do not consider these my favorite holidays when I take time to honor patriots...... I consider those days serious. These are holidays that reflect upon sacrifice and service to country.

I am disapponted that the USA celebrates those days with "sales and bargains" !!! People look foward to the sales and the media neglects the holidays.

JB FYI MLK Day is not celebrated in VT and is considered a regular work/school day...... it's sad.

There are times to celebrate and times to remember. The 4th of July and Thanksgiving are exactly "the what's in it for me"..... those were usually the holidays that I was not involved in a parade.

Re: favorite holidays

i ain't into any holidays. their overated. commerciliztion has rasied it to just another reason to spend money on nothing of value and to support the eastern way of life (read, chineeze goods). the concepts are good (reasons for the holidays), its the reaction on our part that is poor.... not to mention, boating is always more conjested by lunitics (weekend wanna be boaters with no clue) on holidays.... i love going prior to memoral day and after labor day. no one else is hip...... and if they are, they ain't into holidays either i'd guess.......;)

I'm not so sure that's sad... hear me out here. The ultimate opposite of racism is forgetting that there is even a difference between races. Part of that, also includes forgetting differences in racially based herritage. So really, as long as there isn't racism being practices in the mainstream there, then that's kinda a good thing.

Anyway, not to hijack the thread, you can't forget labor day... nothing beats the start of summer (except maybe the start of spring, so maybe easter is also high on the list?).

For me the worst holiday is new years... it marks the point at which there is nothing to look forward to until easter.

Re: favorite holidays

Christmas, by far. It's not that I am un-American, or that I just like to get presents, but it's the only time of the year that my whole family gets together. I Have family in PA, CA, MN, & ME, and its great to be able to see everyone. Plus I love when everyone is in the Christmas spirit, if only we would have a few more "white Christmas'" in Philly, where we spend X-mas.
