Hi guys, Im new here. about to get into my first boat and want to make sure Im not gonna sink the thing. Im a really big guy at 450 pounds, my wife weighs 190 and will often be in the boat with me. Its a 14ft fiberglass boat with 15 hoarse on the back, and a trolling motor on the front. The boat is 4ft wide. It will mostly be used on small lakes (less than 25 acres) and rivers in Florida. I dont have any desire to salt water fish. Do you think I would be ok in it? The only reason Im picking THIS boat is that we are doing some trading with the current owner. Heres a link to the CL add. Thanks for the help.

I would think you are at or over the max capacity of that boat with the both of you plus gear. The only way to be sure is to check the capacity plate on the transom.

As a bigger guy myself I can tell you you will be more comfortable in a larger vessel. More room to stretch out, stand up and move around.

It is a neat little boat tho

I would say a larger boat. Almost 700 pounds probably won't work in that craft. You would be far more comfortable in a larger vessel and personally...with higher gunnels.

I don't know about a stickie, but the title would make a good traditional name for a Native American  :D

I had one of those many moons ago. They are more stable than you think, although mine was 15ft. I would suggest a sea trial to see how the two of you feel in the boat and if there are any stability issues for you. I would say it is probably borderline at best, but might be worth a try if the horse trading is good. Worst case scenario is you take it out a few times and find out you have to sell to get something bigger ... But sea trial before you trade ... make sure it is comfortable for you. And don't "love it" so much that you MAKE it work. Do an honest evaluation of how you feel and how the boat handles with both of you in it.

Much better choice! But stick to the smaller lakes you mentioned. Sea trial it and make sure it runs the way you want fully loaded with cooler, gear etc. 40 hp may be close if you have to run far. if you think you will be heading to bigger waters... Go larger. Good luck! Making sure the boat you end up with will work for you AND your wife is a great idea. Mama ain't happy, nobody is happy. Not to mention that a family that fishes together, stays together;)

Much better but with people, motor, gas, battery, fishing equipment, safety equipment, cooler and more you would be more comfortable and safer in a 17'er or larger.

The third time around ( a little porky myself) I figured it out. They are these little things called capacity tags on boats and they are there for a reason. One can usually exceed the the total people weight by a little but the total of people, motor and gear must always be less than the stated capacity. At 650 pounds for 2 people you need a boat rated for 4 people, at least 825 pounds of people, motor and gear and that assumes a pretty small motor and gas tank.

Wider is always better.
